BEREA, Ky. — A two-day woodworking workshop called Tools and Stools with Don Weber is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, at the Berea Makerspace, located at 116 Spring Circle Drive.
The class is built around a hands-on philosophy: participants build a traditional hand tool first, then use that same tool to complete a small furniture project.
🪚 Building the Tool and the Project
On the first day, students focus on building a bow saw. Instructor Don Weber will demonstrate multiple styles of the tool, though the simpler carpentry version is recommended for most participants.
On day two, students put their new tool to work, using the bow saw to cut an oak stool seat. The session also covers forming legs using a draw knife and tenon cutter. The workshop is designed to be accessible for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced makers.
🔨 About the Instructor
Don Weber is known as “the Bodger of Paint Lick.” He is a traditional woodworker and blacksmith specializing in bodging, a historic craft focused on green woodworking and tool making. His work spans furniture, tools, and fly rods, and he is a frequent educator in the Appalachian craft tradition.
✅ Logistics and Registration
The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. The minimum age to participate is 16, and adults must be present for any participating minors. The cost is $115, which includes all necessary materials. Registration is required with payment in full, and the cancellation cutoff is Friday, May 29, at 12:00 p.m.
