Summer has a way of moving faster than expected. June programs begin, the Fourth of July passes, and families start thinking about school supplies before they realize several weeks of summer remain. One useful Berea program is still available throughout that final stretch.
The Madison County Public Library’s Berea branch is offering Lunch Bunch To-Go every weekday from 11 a.m. to noon through Friday, August 7, 2026. Children and teenagers age 18 and under can receive a free lunch from the library’s community room and take it with them. The Berea branch is located at 319 Chestnut Street. There is no charge for the meal, and the library’s program description does not limit participation to families enrolled in a particular school or receiving another form of assistance. The offer is simple: young people age 18 and under can come to the library during the lunch hour and receive a meal.
A Few Weeks Still Remain ⏳
Lunch Bunch To-Go began near the start of summer, but families who have not used it yet have not missed their opportunity. The program continues Monday through Friday until August 7, leaving several more weeks when a library trip can also take care of lunch.
Families may stop by before or after choosing books, using the computers, attending another library activity, or simply getting out of the house for a while. The meal does not have to become a major outing, which is part of what makes the program useful. A parent or caregiver can plan a quick stop between errands, older children and teenagers can pick up a meal during a library visit, and families spending the day elsewhere can take lunch with them.
The Berea Program Is the To-Go Version 🧺
Madison County Public Library operates slightly different lunch programs at its two main branches. The Berea program is called Lunch Bunch To-Go and runs from 11 a.m. to noon. Children pick up their meals in the community room and may take them with them.
The Richmond branch offers the regular Lunch Bunch from noon to 1 p.m. That version is designed more as a shared mealtime, with children’s television programs shown while participants eat. Berea families should remember the earlier time: lunch pickup begins at 11 a.m. and ends at noon.
The Library Program Lasts a Few Days Longer 📅
Families using more than one Berea summer meal program should pay close attention to the ending dates. Lunch Bunch To-Go at the Berea library continues every weekday through Friday, August 7. The multi-day meal-box pickup at Berea Community School ends earlier; its final scheduled service is Tuesday, August 4.
That school program operates from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays at Berea Community School. Because the season ends on a Tuesday, there will not be another school pickup on Friday, August 7. Families who still need a weekday meal later that week can use Lunch Bunch To-Go at the library from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The two programs also follow different pickup rules. At the library, children and teenagers pick up the day’s lunch from the community room. Berea Community School provides boxes containing multiple meals. Parents may pick those boxes up without their children only when they have reserved a pickup through Berea Kids Eat. When reservations are unavailable, the children must be present. Knowing those differences can prevent a wasted trip during the final week.
The Program Is for Everyone 18 and Under 👧🧑
The library calendar sometimes places Lunch Bunch among its elementary-age programs, but the actual eligibility is broader. The library states that all attendees age 18 and under eat free, which includes younger children, school-age children, and teenagers.
Summer meal programs are designed to help fill the gap created when school cafeterias close for the summer. Many children who eat breakfast or lunch at school during the academic year suddenly need those meals provided at home, and even families who normally manage well can feel the difference when grocery bills rise for several weeks in a row. USDA summer nutrition programs provide free meals through approved community locations such as schools, parks, libraries, and recreation centers. Children age 18 and under can participate at qualifying open meal sites without completing an income application. This means families do not need to feel that they are taking a meal away from someone else; the program exists to be used.
Part of a Larger Summer Nutrition Effort ☀️
These local meals are connected to the United States Department of Agriculture’s summer nutrition programs, now promoted nationally under the name SUN Programs. SUN Meals provides free meals and snacks at schools, parks, libraries, and other neighborhood locations. Children and teenagers age 18 and under can participate without completing an income application.
USDA also uses the name SUN Meals To-Go for approved pickup and delivery programs in eligible rural communities. Berea Kids Eat identifies its multi-day meal-box service at Berea Community School as part of the SUN Meals Summer Feeding Program.
The Madison County Public Library uses its own local name, Lunch Bunch To-Go, for the daily Berea service. The practical goal is the same: helping children continue receiving dependable meals during the weeks when school cafeterias are closed. The federal name matters because it shows that these are not isolated giveaways. They are part of a nationwide nutrition system created to help families cover the summer gap between school years.
What Families Should Know ✅
Lunch Bunch To-Go is offered on weekdays from 11 a.m. until noon at the Madison County Public Library’s Berea branch, with the final scheduled day falling on Friday, August 7. Meals are free for all attendees age 18 and under.
The library warns that it cannot guarantee meals have not come into contact with tree nuts, soy, or other allergens. Families with dietary restrictions should contact the library’s Youth Services team in advance to ask about a specialty lunch, though the library notes that not every specialty request can be guaranteed. The Berea library can be reached directly at 859-986-7112.
One Less Meal to Plan 🍽️
Free summer meal programs are sometimes discussed only as emergency assistance, but they are far more useful than that. They give children a dependable meal while school is out, help parents stretch a grocery budget, and make a library visit much easier. They also connect families with books, activities, computers, and other community resources while they are already in the building.
There is no prize for struggling through summer without using a service created specifically for local families. There are still a few weeks before school begins and before Lunch Bunch To-Go ends for the season. For Berea families with children or teenagers at home, that means there is still time to let the library handle lunch.
