🚂 L&N Day Returns June 13 With Trains, Depot Tours, Food Trucks, and Classic Cars

BEREA, Ky. — Berea’s rich railroad heritage will take center stage on Saturday, June 13, when the 26th Annual L&N Day returns to the historic L&N Depot and Berea Welcome Center.

🗓 Date: Saturday, June 13
⏰ Event hours:9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
📍 Location: Berea Welcome Center, 3 Artist Circle
💲 Cost: Free
🚂 Highlight: Frequent opportunities to watch active CSX freight trains pass beside the depot platform

The free family event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Berea Welcome Center, located at 3 Artist Circle. The day’s festivities include an expansive market of authentic railroad memorabilia, guided depot architecture tours, intricate model train displays, children’s interactive activities, local food trucks, and a classic car show.

A major highlight for rail enthusiasts will be the frequent opportunities to watch active, modern CSX freight trains pass directly alongside the depot platform.

🚗 Classic Cars and Historic Corridors

The open classic car show is sponsored directly by Berea Volunteer Fire and Rescue. The vehicles will be on display from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., culminating in a public classic car parade through the district starting exactly at 2:00 p.m. L&N Day is hosted within Berea’s beautifully preserved 1917 Louisville & Nashville Railroad Depot, which now serves as the city’s official welcome hub. Kentucky Tourism recognizes the structure as a masterfully restored early 20th-century transit landmark, officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Before the construction of Interstate 75 permanently altered regional transit, railroads and older wilderness corridors served as the primary economic lifelines connecting Berea to national trade, incoming college students, traveling artists, and tourists. L&N Day honors that legacy by allowing visitors to step directly into the transit footprint that built the town.

🧳 Railroad Memorabilia and Citizen Preservation

Inside the depot lines, collectors and casual visitors can browse a specialized marketplace. Past events have featured a wide array of vintage rail treasures, including antique conductors’ lanterns, heavy cast-iron railroad signs, historical dining car chinaware, model train components, and commemorative apparel. The gathering regularly acts as a reunion hub for retired and active railroad workforce veterans, giving attendees a unique chance to hear first-hand storytelling from the golden age of American rail.

The building’s preservation is a story of community action. After passenger rail service ceased and the depot sat abandoned for several years, a grassroots coalition of concerned Berea citizens successfully organized to halt its demolition. Their efforts secured the building’s spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, prompting the City of Berea to acquire and fully renovate the property.

🧭 Visitor Logistics and Track Safety

Today, the depot functions as a anchor for the Old Town Artisan Village. Visitors can easily use L&N Day as a launching point to explore the dense collection of working craft studios, galleries, and independent restaurants along North Broadway.

Because the event takes place in the heart of Old Town and draws high attendance, motorists should budget extra time to secure local parking. Pedestrians must exercise heightened vigilance around Artist Circle and North Broadway, particularly during the mid-afternoon vehicle parade.

⚠️ Track Safety Warning: Because the depot platform sits immediately adjacent to a live, high-volume CSX freight line, all attendees—especially those supervising young children—must remain strictly behind the painted yellow platform safety markers at all times.
