The Final Weekend: Macbeth Closes Spotlight’s 23rd Season 🎭

Macbeth closes Spotlight’s 23rd season this Sunday, June 28, at The Spotlight Playhouse, and with it, the theater’s 23rd season comes to an end.

This is not a quiet, museum-piece Shakespeare. It is a big, dark, community-built production with 35 local performers on stage. And it is your last chance to see it before the Playhouse takes a brief breather and opens Season 24.

The Show 🎬

The Bluegrass Players, the adult community theater troupe at The Spotlight Playhouse, are behind this production. The production is directed by Edwin Tait, with Jennifer Woodruff serving as assistant stage manager. Together, they have helped make Shakespeare a regular part of the Playhouse’s creative life.

If you have never seen Shakespeare live, Macbeth is one of the easier places to start. The story moves fast. A soldier hears a prophecy from three witches, wants what it promises, and makes choices he cannot undo. Then the whole world starts closing in around him.

That is a play. That is theater. That is not homework.

The Spotlight’s intimate black box space puts the audience right inside the action. You are not watching from a distance. You are in the room with the ambition, the fear, and the guilt.

Why This One Matters πŸ•―οΈ

This production closes out the 23rd season. That alone makes it worth noting.

But the cast of 35 means more than just a big show. It means more local performers, more families connected to the production, and more people helping bring Shakespeare to the stage in Berea.

The Bluegrass Players have been part of the Spotlight story since 2014, giving local actors a place to do larger stage work and giving Berea audiences access to live theater close to home. That is what community theater is supposed to do.

Season 24 Starts Soon 🎟️

The good news is the stage will not stay dark for long. Season 24 kicks off the last weekend of July with two shows running side by side.

Seussical the Musical runs July 31 through August 9, presented by Spotlight Acting School students ages 14 to 18. Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all your favorite Dr. Seuss characters come to life in a bright, family-friendly musical.

Alongside it, the adult company presents Wolves of Sherwood, running July 31 through August 8. It is a new take on the Robin Hood legend, full of loyalty, danger, and action in Nottingham and the forest beyond. Luke Madden directs the production, bringing his experience with stage combat and action choreography to the adult company’s summer offering.

That is a strong start to the new season. Family fare and adult drama, running at the same time.

Final Thoughts ❀️

This is the kind of weekend that reminds you why local theater matters. A big cast of your neighbors, a story that has lasted for centuries, and a community that keeps showing up to build something together.

Season 23 ends with blood, prophecy, and ambition. Season 24 starts with Dr. Seuss and Robin Hood.

That is a good transition. And it is all happening right here on Richmond Road.

Berea is better when people show up for the things their neighbors are building. This weekend is a good time to prove that.
