Roy Harmon Sparkman, 66, husband of Armeda Miller Sparkman, died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sparkman was born December 7, 1944, in Jackson Co., KY, the son of the late Harmon and Cora Powell Sparkman. He attended the Ravenna Church of God, and was a very loving, caring and giving father and grandfather. Mr. Sparkman was a man of many trades. He worked as an auto mechanic at Jack Burford Chevrolet for many years and retired in 2000. He loved hard work and was always willing to lend a neighbor a helping hand. He had many talents, was a dedicated craftsman, and an avid fisherman.

Warden Percy Hacker

Lt Col (Retired) Warden Percy Hacker, 80, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Saint Joseph East Hospital, in Lexington.

He was born on December 3, 1930 in Clay County, to the late Oscar and Catherine Philpot Hacker. Percy was a retired businessman and a retired Lt. Colonel in the U. S. Army – Kentucky National Guard, where he served for 22 years. Prior to that, he served in the U. S. Air Force for four years in Korea. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond and a member of the Madison County Country Club and the Richmond Elks Club # 581, where he had served as Past Exalted Ruler. He was the owner and operator of Hacker Lumber Company and Builders Concrete Block in Madison County. Percy was an avid walker, averaging four miles per day until his failing health prevented it.

RICHMOND — Shelby Joe Masters, 74, husband of Ann Sallee Masters, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011.
Mr. Masters was born in Madison County on March 21, 1937, to Robert Marshall and Geneva Whitaker Masters. He was a farmer who enjoyed family gatherings, the company of friends, fishing and cooking.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: two sons, Joe M. Masters (Darlene) and Michael N. Masters, all of Richmond; granddaughter, Bobbi Jo Sharon (Chris); two great-grandchildren, Blake Hedges-Sharon and Madison Rayne Sharon; Jeff Rose (who was like a son); his aunt, Ruth Chandler; several cousins and many friends.

Fire Department Funeral Will be Conducted for Firefighter Killed in Crash

Timothy Allen “Chewy” Farthing, 29, of Sam Jones Road, Richmond, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011, from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Red House Road.

He was born October 14, 1981, in Richmond, Kentucky and served his community as a firefighter and EMT with the Richmond Fire Department and Madison County Ambulance Service. Timothy loved fishing and adored his family. He was a member of Whitehall Holiness Church of Richmond.

Survivors inclued his wife, Sherri Lynn Northern Farthing, three daughters, Evylin McKenna Farthing, Cailyn Denise Farthing, and Macey Maree Farthing; one son, Seth Allen Thomas Farthing; his mother, Carla Denise Farthing; one sister, Davina Richardson; one brother, Joshua Noel Farthing; his grandmothers, Mima Farthing and Wilma Ballard, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Timothy was preceded in death by his father, Troy Allen Farthing.

Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Ray Northern, Bro. Virgil Gibson and Bro. Marvin Evans officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 – 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. The Richmond Fire Department Personnel and Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.

RICHMOND — Norman Cheeks, 76, husband of Sally Cheeks, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, in the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Ky. Mr. Cheeks was born January 27, 1935, and was the son of the late James and Annie Chamberlain Cheeks. He was a retired farmer and a mechanic and he was a member of the Newby Baptist Church. He loved to fish as well as repair and paint old cars. Norman was a jack of all trades.

Israel Ike Hembree, age 61, passed away early Saturday morning, April 16, 2011, after a long battle with diabetes. He was a life long resident of Berea born Aug. 6, 1949, son of the late Edward and Olevia Taylor Hembree, an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, member of Berea Masonic Lodge # 617 F&AM, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Oleika Shrine Temple. Ike was a contractor by trade, a member of the Westside Baptist Church and previously a member of Middletown Baptist Church. RICHMOND — M. Susan Shower, 72, of Richmond, has moved on to her next job of making cookies for St. Peter using all the butter and sugar she wants, as well as sandwiches for the children of Heaven. She passed peacefully on April 11, 2011, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center.

She was born in Frankfort, Ky., February 27, 1929, to the late John Fred and Elsie Katherine Snow Salchli.
