OBITUARIES SEP. 15-22, 2019

Donald James Moore

Donald James Moore, 68, of Berea, departed peacefully for his heavenly home Sunday, September 15, 2019 at UK Medical Center. Don was born July 27, 1951 in Berea, son of the late Daniel J. and Eleanor McIntosh Moore.

He moved to Berea as a young boy with his parents and siblings. While in Berea, he met his wife of 47 years. Don was a member of White Lick Baptist Church and attended the Men’s Sunday School Class, a member of and Chaplain to Berea American Legion Cleveland Frost Post 50. He was a retiree of Dresser Industries.

Sandra K. Wells

Sandra “Sandy” K. Wells, 61, of Berea, went to be with the Lord the 8th day of September 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was born the 22nd day of April 1958 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Reason and Mary Jane Melton Williams.

She was a member of Westside Christian Church in Richmond.  Sandy was a 1980 Alumni of Berea College and was retired from the Technology Department as an administrative assistant. She was a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and Phi Kappa Phi. Sandy enjoyed crocheting, Knitting, stained glass making and fishing, she was also very active in Relay for Life.

Teresa Goins

Teresa Goins

Teresa Goins, age 62, passed away Tuesday September 10, 2019 at Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice in Lexington. She was born June 10, 1957 in Madison County, Kentucky.

Teresa was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. She loved to crochet, spend time with her family and was a very generous and tender-hearted person. Teresa especially loved her children, grandchildren and her dogs.

Ms. Goins was preceded in death by her father, James Browning Goins, her mother and stepdad, Anna Mae and Lawson Perciful Haenschke, and one sister, Sheila King.

Glen Morgan Webster

Glen Morgan Webster, age 75, husband of Lorie Webster passed away Friday, September 6, 2019 at Baptist Health Lexington following a brief illness. He was born on September 22, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Clarence, Sr. and Alta May MacDonald Webster.

He attended the Lighthouse Baptist Church. Mr. Webster was a Missionary Baptist Preacher and began preaching at the age of 15, his mission in life was to lead others to the saving grace of Jesus Christ! An avid student of God’s word he was a Godly man and led by example, his favorite gift to give was the Bible with a handwritten note of encouragement tucked inside. He loved life, traveling and meeting new people never meeting a stranger he was always ready to help and comfort others. Mr. Webster never turned away from a challenge and raised his children to never use the word can’t, with God grit and determination you can succeed at what you set out to do.

Rev. Neal Prather

Neal Prather

Rev. Neal Prather, age 86, a native of Madison County, Kentucky and pastor for over 40 years, departed this life on September 4, 2019 at Baptist Health in Lexington. Neal was born on November 19, 1932 to the late Taylor and Ruby Bowlin Prather.

He was a graduate Andersonville Baptist Seminary in Camilla, Georgia where he received his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate in Theology. He was member of the Hays Fork Baptist Church in Kingston, KY, and a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean Conflict.

Melinda Kate Poynter

Ms. Melinda Kate Poynter, age 54, of Mt. Vernon, KY, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY. Melinda was born on October 3, 1964 in Connersville, IN, to the late William (Bill) Sterling, and Cheryl Sterling. 

Melinda was a retired Nursing Assistant/Unit Secretary at the Rockcastle Regional Hospital where she enjoyed her work.  She was also a member of the Roundstone Baptist Church.  She enjoyed spending time with her friends, family, and church family.  She enjoyed reading her Bible, feeding the birds, working with her flowers, sewing, and playing with her grandchildren.

Donald Wayne Shultz, a longtime Berea resident, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2019.

He was dearly beloved by his Tennessee and Berea families.

Talented, hardworking, with a great love of nature, he was a skilled gardener with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of plants and their care. With the eyes and hands of an artist, he made our world a more beautiful place.

Rest in peace brother and friend.

In accordance with Don’s wishes no memorial service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Lakes Funeral Home Berea.

Ashley Richardson

Ashley Dawn Richardson, age 28, of Salter Rd., passed away at UK Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington on August 27, 2019. Ashley was born in Richmond, Kentucky to Michael Richardson and the late Jan Baber Richardson.

She was employed by Hitachi in Berea.

In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Mary Baber.

She is survived by her father, Michael (Joyce) Richardson; one brother, Mikey Ryan (Brooke) Richardson; two aunts, Debbie and Terry Moberly and Nancy and John Sullivan; one uncle Bruce and Lisa Baber; niece, Adalynn Richardson; she was a godmother to Brylee Anglin, Natalie and Aaron Alexander; grandparents, Ann and Hume Richardson; and her loving animals, Izzy, Blue and Sophie. She also leaves behind many extended family member and friends.

Vernon Lee Cummins, 86, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019, at his home in Berea. Born in Mt. Vernon on October 6, 1932, the son of Joe and Nancy Sowder Cummins.

He left school in the 6th grade and spent his teen years selling popcorn at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. He spent time as a cook at the local Bellyachers restaurant eventually relocating to Berea to become a car salesman. He co-owned, owned and operated several dealerships to include Baker & Cummins and Cummins & Foley in Berea and Vernon Cummins Auto in Richmond. He was also the Used Car Manager at Joe Conrad Chevrolet in Lexington.

James Hunter Lowery

James Hunter Lowery, age 55, passed away Friday August 16, 2019 at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY. James was born February 23, 1964 in Lexington KY to Carolyn Rose Bucio.

James was a retired foreman of the KY State Highway Department, he loved to fish, and loved being a father. James was of the Baptist faith.

James is survived by one son Kevin Lowery, his mother Carolyn Rose Bucio, one brother William Lowery, and one sister Kimberly Taylor.

Funeral services will be 1:00PM Friday at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Vester Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in the Bark Road Cemetery in Waco, KY. Visitation will be 11-1 Friday at the funeral home.

Mabel Turner

Mabel Rose Turner was born on April 12, 1930 and peacefully went to her heavenly home on August 20, 2019. Mabel was the fifth of thirteen children born to the late Delbert and Myrtle Murphy Rose of Chestnut Flat, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by three of her brothers: Virgil Rose, Lloyd Rose, Vester Rose, and six of her sisters: Margaret Spivey, Alpha Turner, Ilean Harrison, Annette Morris, Evelyn Marcum and infant sister Violet.

She is survived by three siblings: Geraldine Isaacs, Carl Rose, and Mildred Moore.

Gov. Bevin Orders Flags to Half-Staff Today in Honor of Kentucky Serviceman

Navy Fireman 1st Class Billy J. Johnson

Gov. Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff today, in honor of a Kentucky serviceman who was killed in action during World War II, but whose remains were only recently identified.

Navy Fireman 1st Class Billy J. Johnson, 22, of Caney, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Johnson.

Chester Edwin Elkin

Chester Edwin “Ches Ed” Elkin, age 99, husband of 76 years to Mary Ellen Gilbreath Elkin, died Thursday August 15, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center. He was born on August 22, 1919 in the Wallaceton Community of Madison County to the late Chester and Nell Kidd Elkin.

Mr. Elkin joined the Wallaceton Baptist Church at the age of 17 and was the oldest member of the church at his death. He was also the oldest member of Berea Masonic Lodge # 617 F & AM. Mr. Elkin served in the Air Force for the entirety of the WWII as an airplane mechanic and built an air strip for planes to land on the island of Iwo Jima. After the war he returned to Lexington and worked for South Eastern Greyhound for 10 years before moving back home to Berea.

Michael Lester Bradley, age 40, husband of Becky, of Brodhead, KY, passed away on August 14, 2019, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Michael was born on October 24, 1978, a son of Derotha Elliot Bradley and the late Michael Ray Bradley, in Barbourville, KY.

He was a member and a trustee of Jacob’s Well Baptist Church. He was united in marriage to his wife Becky on February 21st, 2015. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, basketball, and watching all UK sports.

Boyd “Shorty” Van Winkle, age 87, of Berea, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Baptist Health in Richmond. Shorty was born in Jackson County, Kentucky to the late Cassius Winfred and Elva Eversole Van Winkle.

He was a mechanic by trade for Berea College where he retired.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife Darlene Parker Van Winkle; and five siblings, Earl Van Winkle, Orville Van Winkle, Everett Van Winkle, Gilberta Smith, Theda Abrams, and Ruby Rice.

Barbara Rader

Barbara Wren Rader, 87, died Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at her home after a long illness. Born in Rockacastle County on May 24, 1932. Daughter to Henry Lee and Emily Agnes Bowlin Wren, and wife for 67 years to Emanuel Radar also of Rockcastle County and he survives. 

Barbara began her teaching career teaching in a two room school house in Rockcastle County for six (6) years before transferring with her husband to Bourbon County where she taught for fifty one (51) wonderful years. Her experiences inspired her book, Oh That My Words Were Now Written, a chronicle of a half-century of teaching in the rural Kentucky school system, and was a member of the Rockcastle Teachers Association.
