Charles McKinney

Charles McKinney, age 70, passed widower of Barbara Sparks McKinney, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at his home. He was born December 20, 1948 in Jackson County, KY to the late Harlan and Nannie Anglin McKinney.

Charles was of the Holiness faith and enjoyed to four wheeling.

Other than his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one nephew, Robbie Sparks.

Deborah Combs

Deborah “Debbie” King Combs, 61, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Debbie was born on April 23, 1958 in Richmond and was the daughter of Frank and Lorene Evans King, both of whom preceded her in death.

Debbie was raised by her loving Aunt Susie Frances Walls King “Mammie”.  Debbie was a self-employed business woman and a former Clerk in Madison County.    She enjoyed painting, gardening, talking on the phone and spending time with family and friends.  She was a very spiritual person, loving Mother, Wife and Nana who enjoyed listening to nature and believed in paying it forward.

Savannah Spurlock

Savannah Marie Spurlock, 23, of Richmond.

Savannah was born on February 5, 1996 in Richmond, KY. She was a mother and homemaker.

Survivors include: her father, Cecil Spurlock (Fiancée- Cheryl Lynn Wright); her mother, Ellen Spurlock; four sons, Noah Bleu Spurlock, Jace Cruz Smith, Zuri Legend Smith, and Zane Justice Smith; maternal grandparents, Bill and Carol Thoma; one sister Stephanie Rose Spurlock; uncles and aunts, Mark & Lisa Thoma, and Elaine & Fred Moore; her best friend and godmother of her children, Sabrina Speratos; and Shaq Smith, father of Jace, Zuri and Zane.

Visitation for Savannah will be from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Funeral services and burial will be private.

Christine Potter Fox, age 72 of Berea, passed away on July 9, 2019 at Kenwood Nursing Home in Richmond. Christine was born in Letcher County, Kentucky to the late Patrick Jefferson and Ica Hall Potter.

She was a Realtor for Don Foster and Associates and a member of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband Waldo Fox this past February; and by three brothers, Melvin Potter, Jimmy Potter and Ellis Potter.

Thomas Lowell Fry

Thomas Lowell Fry

Thomas Lowell Fry of Oklahoma City went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 6, 2019 at the age of 88.  Thomas was born in the hills of Kentucky August 22, 1930, the only child of Charles L. and Mabel E. Fry. 

He served his country proudly during a 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force, followed by a career at Honeywell.  He attended Harvest Hills Baptist Church for 17 years with his late wife, Inge, and Highland Hills Baptist Church later in life.  Thomas enjoyed trains, model railroading, collecting coins, spraying some lead down range, four-wheeling and a good laugh.

Ronald James Keene

Ronald James Keene, age 64 of Berea, passed away suddenly at Baptist Health in Richmond on Monday, July 8, 2019. Ronald was born in Danville, Kentucky to the late Silas and Allene Cain Keene.

He had been employed as a truck driver with Schneider Trucking and was of the holiness faith.

Ronald was survived by two children, Peyton Keene and Jessica Keene Lee; four siblings, Sarah Powell, Anna Madison, Patsy Isaacs, and Pat Johnson; four grandchildren, Brooklyn, Slade, Rylan, and Kyrah Houk; and close friend, Charlotte Keathley.

Duane Edward Bratcher

Duane Edward Bratcher, 53, of Berea, died suddenly Sunday, July 7, 2019 at his home. Born September 9, 1965 in Berea, son to Ronnie and the late Freda Robinson Bratcher.

He was a construction worker and accomplished landscaper and member of the Baptist faith. Duane was an authority on all sports, a huge fan and member of the KISS Nation and major memorabilia collector. He was known by everyone in the community for his bright yellow Hummer and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Joann Eversole

Joann Eversole, age 75 of Gabbard Road, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at UK Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington. Joann was born in Jackson County, Kentucky to the late Dexter and Chloe Clark Forman.

She was a homemaker, a foster mother, and a member of the holiness faith. She attended Big Hill Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Faye Carpenter and Euel Akemon.

Gage Carter Griffin, 5, of Waynesburg, KY passed away on Monday, June 17, 2019. He was born December 1, 2013 in Lexington, KY to Eddie Griffin Jr. of Wayne County, KY and Amanda Shepherd Martin of Waynesburg, KY.

He was a real superhero and called himself “the real batman”. He loved Batman, riding four wheelers, playing with his sisters, and loved camouflage and boots.  He was also a student at Waynesburg Elementary School.

Alice Faye Johnson Gabbard, age 75, of Paint Lick, KY, wife of Dallis Gabbard for 58 years, passed over to her heavenly home Tuesday June 18, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY. Faye was born November 9, 1943 in Berea, KY to the late Miley & Myrtle Malicote Johnson.

Faye was a retired employee of Motor Wheel after 20 years of service, she loved raising flowers for everyone to see, loved her church, and especially loved her family. She was a member of Church On The Rock.

Loretta Lackey Gulley, 83, of Richmond, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at her home. She was born in Garrard County, Kentucky on Friday, July 12, 1935 the daughter of the late Beecham and Cordie Ward Lackey.

She was a retired dietician with Madison County Schools having worked at Clark Moores Middle School for many years. She was a member of the Poosey Methodist Church and in later years really enjoyed going to Better Burger Restaurant and visiting with her friends.

Richard Bryant Drake

Richard Bryant Drake

Richard Bryant Drake was born August 5, 1925 in Ames, Iowa and died on June 7, 2019 in Berea, Kentucky. He married Julia Leland Angevine Drake in 1945. 

Dr. Drake was a professor of history at Berea College from 1956 to 1993. He loved Berea and wrote a book on the history of Appalachia. A long time member of Union Church, he sang in the choir and participated in numerous musical events and church governing committees. Dick graduated from Doane College and married Judy before his military service began. He attended graduate school at the University of Chicago and Emory University. He was very active in social issues in the 60’s and 70’s and spent a few decades serving on the Board of Kobe College in Japan. His children especially remember family stories and camping trips to Michigan and Colorado.

Cooper Shane Rickson, 15, of Berea died Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at his residence. He was a Anniston, Alabama native born April 19, 2004, son of Michael and Christi Boldin Rickson.

He was a student at Madison Southern High School where he was active in the ROTC program. Cooper loved animals, enjoyed fishing, video games and riding his motor cycle.

In addition to his loving parents he is survived by his brother, Austin Rickson (Savannaha Burns); maternal grandparents, Larry and Diane Boldin; paternal grandmother, Glenda Rickson; aunt, Leigh Rainwater (Alan).
