Plenty of towns can put on a race once. Keeping one on the calendar for thirty straight years takes a community that keeps showing up. The Spoonbread Festival 5K Run/Walk hits its 30th annual running this September, and it is still one of the most straightforward ways in Berea to do some good before breakfast on a Sunday morning.
The essentials
The race runs Sunday, September 20, 2026, closing out the festival weekend. The 5K starts at 8:00 a.m. EDT, with the 1 Mile Fun Walk rolling out right behind it at 8:02. Everything stages at the Russel Acton Folk Center, 212 West Jefferson Street, in Old Town. One note on spelling while we are here: the official name takes a single L in Russel, which is worth knowing if you are searching for it online.
Fees are $30 for the 5K Run/Walk, $25 for the 1 Mile Fun Walk, and $30 for a Virtual 5K if you would rather cover the distance on your own schedule. Online registration closes at 9:00 a.m. EDT on race morning, and the virtual option closes earlier, on September 16.
Race morning
Packet pickup happens race morning only, from 5:30 to 7:45 a.m., in the parking lot at the Folk Center. There is no advance-day pickup, so build your morning around that window. My advice is to register online before the weekend. The online window technically stays open until 9:00 a.m. on race day, but pickup shuts down at 7:45 and the gun goes off at 8:00, so the practical move is to be registered, parked, and pinned well before seven-thirty. That lot is where all the early action happens, and with the festival set up along West Jefferson Street through the weekend, traffic around Old Town will build as the morning goes on. Give yourself room.
The course follows the Berea City Trail, flat and paved, with one water stop you will pass twice. The race is chip timed, with awards for overall finishers and for age groups in five-year brackets from 0-9 up through 70+. Free race photos are part of the deal, and the shirts are commemorative poly/cotton, the kind you will actually wash and wear again.
Where the money goes
Proceeds benefit the Berea Chamber of Commerce, which also sponsors the Spoonbread Festival itself. That connection is the part I want folks to see clearly. The Chamber works on behalf of Berea’s shops, restaurants, and studios year-round, and it carries this festival on its back every September. The 5K is one of the ways that work stays funded. Your entry fee does not leave Madison County. It pays for the race and helps keep the whole September tradition on solid ground.

The 30th annual Spoonbread Festival runs September 18 through 20, centered on West Jefferson Street and Jefferson Memorial Park. Register before the weekend if you can, get to the lot with time to spare for pickup, and line up for the 8:00 start or the 8:02 fun walk, whichever fits your feet. The trail is flat, the timing is accurate, and somebody else is handling the pictures.
