Families looking for an engaging, hands-on afternoon can get an up-close look at these native species this coming weekend. The Berea College Forestry Outreach Center will host a free public program, “Family Activity: Forest Reptiles,” on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The event is designed for curious minds of all ages and is part of the center’s ongoing family activity series.
What to Expect at the Program
During the hour-long session, center naturalists will introduce participants to the snakes, turtles, and lizards that live right here in Madison County. The presentation breaks down where these animals shelter, what they eat, and how they navigate our regional climate.
The centerpiece of the afternoon will be a live educational guest. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet an Eastern box turtle in person, allowing young naturalists to see its patterned carapace and learn why leaving wild turtles in their natural habitat is crucial for their survival. Naturalists will also cover basic field identification tips and address common myths surrounding native snake species found across the Cumberland Plateau foothills.

Located at 2047 Big Hill Road in Berea, the Forestry Outreach Center sits directly across from the Pinnacles trailhead parking area. It serves as an educational gateway to the Berea College Forest, dedicated to fulfilling its core mission to connect people to the natural world around them.
The facility welcomes more than 10,000 visitors through its doors each year, while the adjacent Pinnacles trails attract over 100,000 hikers annually.
