September proved to be another busy month for the Berea Fire Department. It began with the testing and certification of ladders by a third-party company, as well as testing and certification of the department’s self-contained breathing apparatus units (SCBA’s), also conducted by a third-party. The equipment is regulated by National Fire Protection Standards.
The Berea Fire Department re-certified the police department in basic first aid and CPR, and participated in several public relations events at Cross Roads Church, Hyster-Yale, Berea College Child Development Lab, the Berea Spoonbread Festival, Sunshine friends, Berea Community High School Homecoming Parade, and Madison Southern Homecoming Parade.
The BFD maintained its monthly training regimen, studying victim search & rescue, water supply, vehicle extrication, fire behavior, along with all our instructors attending a recertification class in methodology.
We inspected and pre-planned 78 business in the city, and answered 74 calls for service. This is still a very dry time and the Berea Fire Department asks everyone to abide by the burn ban until further notice.
With a total of 74 calls, the department’s September numbers were as follows:
Rescue and emergency medical service: 14
Motor vehicle accident with injuries: 4
Motor vehicle accident without injuries: 7
Service calls: 14
False alarm or false call: 22
