Berea City Hall is illuminated with red lights this week in honor of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Berea Mayor Bruce Fraley said the gesture is a way of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow citizens. “It’s important to acknowledge the work of all first responders, and in this particular week, we acknowledge and remember the fallen firefighters,” said Mayor Fraley. “This is a reminder to all of us as citizens that for any first responder there comes great risk, and those firefighters put the needs of their fellow citizens and their community ahead of their own, and in some cases, put themselves in a situation where they could pay the ultimate price to protect others.”
The lights will remain red in honor of fallen firefighters through October 6, said Berea Fire Chief Shawn Sandlin, then switch over to pink on October 7, highlighting the Berea Fire Department’s efforts to promote breast cancer awareness.
