The Eastern Kentucky University Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency and is accredited by the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police. The department has an authorized strength of 24 sworn police officers with full law enforcement authority throughout Madison County. Eastern Officers possess statewide authority to investigate criminal offenses that pertain to Eastern Kentucky University.
Officers attend the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Basic Police Academy located on the campus of EKU. Upon completion of the academy officers will be assigned to ride with an experienced field training officer for a minimum of 12 weeks before being assigned to solo patrol duties.

3. Criminal Investigations Unit
4. One EKU Police Officer assigned full time to the F.B.I. Joint Terrorism Task Force
5. Explosive Detection K-9 unit
The department offers the following attractive compensation/benefit package:
Entry level prior to and while in police academy – $17.30/hr
Academy Graduate to 3 years L.E. experience*- $19.23/hr
3 years or more L.E. experience- $20.43/hr
*Lateral applicants with more than 3 years of experience at another police agency start out at the higher pay rate. Officers employed for 3 years at EKUPD receive senior patrol status and qualify for the higher pay rate as well.
