Matt Poynter Jr.
Matt “Mickey” Poynter, Jr. age 67, husband for 33 years to Doris Browning Poynter, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Baptist Health Lexington following a brief illness. Mickey was born December 26, 1951 in Stanford, KY to the late Matt and Annie Reed Poynter.
He was a US Army Veteran serving as gunner on the Huey Medivac helicopters during the Vietnam Conflict. Mickey was a member of Church on The Rock, the most loved poppy and papaw of all, loved to go camping and fishing. He was a former member of the Berea Masonic Lodge # 617, F. & A.M. and former member of the Berea Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. Mickey was also known as the Mayor of East Haiti Road.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by two children, Buster Poynter and Mickey Leeann Poynter.
Other than his wife Doris he is survived by his children; Norma Jean Childress Short and her husband, Greg, Mikel Shane Poynter and his fiancé, Kasey Paynter. One brother, Robert Poynter and his wife, Isabelle of Clearwater Beach, FL, seven grandchildren, Casey Dalton Short and his fiancé, Cammyle VanWinkle, Mayci Makenna Short, Zowie Annmarie Poynter, Slade Remmington Ledford, Mikel Kaine “fat baby” Poynter, Michael Dylan Hutchins, and Kyra Jayne Hutchins all of Berea, KY two great grandchildren Ryker Colt Holbrook and Kynley Reign “Rainey” Short along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other family also survive.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Whittemore officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Todd Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the service.
Pallbearers will be, Shane Poynter, Greg Short, Casey Short, Robert Poynter, Brandon Anderson, and Charles “Bubba” Starnes. Honorary pallbearers will be, Hulen Brumett, Jim Brumett, Donnie Marcum, George Murphy, Stanton Hayes, Tony Wallace, Johnny Wilson, Robert Chasteen, Red Carpenter, Gerald McGuire, Mike Mullikin, Todd French, Jeff French, and Steve Moore.
Viola Aileen Bowlin
Viola Aileen Byrd Bowlin, age 86, widow of the late John Leslie Bowlin, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, KY. Viola was born October 5, 1932 in Berea, KY to the late Hugh and Cora Byrd.
She was a homemaker, loved Nascar, Basketball, and was of the Christian Faith.
Other than her husband and parents Viola was preceded in death by five brothers, Wallace Byrd, Charles Byrd, Hugh Byrd, Jr., Buram Byrd, Cecil Byrd, four sisters, Norine Byrd Golonski, Hazel Byrd Osborne, Ada Byrd Lunsford, and Bertha Lee Byrd Kidwell.
She is survived by three children, Rick Bowlin and his wife Vickie of Berea, KY., John Bowlin, Jr. and his wife Michelle of Irvine, KY., Sandra Martin and her husband Anthony of Richmond, KY., four grandchildren, Dallas Austin Bowlin, Gabby Bowlin, Heather Rae Bowlin, Niel Martin, one sister, Lois Philbeck and sister-in-law, Marie Byrd.
Funeral Services will be 1:00PM Friday May 17, 2019 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Salley Tussey Malloy officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Rockcastle County. Visitation is 11:00AM until service time at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be John Bowlin, Jr., Dallas Bowlin, Anthony Martin, Niel Martin, and Rick Bowlin.
Yvonda Louise Center
Yvonda Louise Tunnell Center, 83, of Rockcastle County died suddenly at her residence on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. She was a Baileyton, Tennessee native born May 29, 1935, daughter of the late Horace and Bertha Goodson Tunnell.
Yvonda was a retired educator having taught in Trimble County, Berea Community and Roundstone Elementary School. She was a Berea College Graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and member of Union Church.
Yvonda was an avid quilter, enjoyed all types of needlework, wonderful cook, property owner and farmer. She was known as a “worker bee” for her ability to teach, work on the farm, raise her children, keep house and cook three square meals each day for her family.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Luther Center; 2 sons, Luther Center, Jr., Stephen Center (Rose); 3 brothers, Carroll Tunnell (Faye), Harold Tunnell, Edd Tunnell; 4 grandchildren, Stephen, Jr., Sarah, Michael, Andrew; 4 great grandchildren, Jackson, Jacob, Sullivan, Camille.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by 2 siblings, Helen Tunnell, Donald Tunnell.
Funeral Service 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Reppert Funeral Home with Pastor Kent Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in Berea Cemetery. Visitation 11:00 AM until service time.
James Dennis Thomas
James Dennis Thomas, 84, of Rockcastle County, died Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. He was a life-long resident of Rockcastle County born August 28, 1934, son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Ramey Thoma,
He was a former employee of Meadow Gold Ice Cream and a retired brick mason. Dennis liked reading westerns, working cross-word puzzles, fishing, and chewing King Bee tobacco. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church and the Masonic Order.
Survivors include 4 children Jeff Thomas, Steven Thomas (Brenda), Tavane Phillips (Chester), Sonya Thomas-Hubbard; 2 brothers Jerry Thomas, Donnie Thomas; 10 grandchildren, Ahlashia, Douglas, Daniel, David, Vanya, Edward, Haley, Caleb, Ashley, Christopher; and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Mullins Thomas; 1 son, Chris Thomas; 3 siblings, Ray Thomas, Ralph Thomas, Aline Arnold; and 3 grandchildren, Stevie, Jason and Amelia.
In accordance with his wishes, Dennis was cremated and a Memorial Service will be scheduled for a later date. Reppert Funeral Home and Cremation Service entrusted with arrangements.
Karen Sue Kuntz
Karen Sue Kuntz, 65, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at her home.The wife of Robert Wayne Kuntz, Karen was born in Paris, Illinois.
She was a homemaker who also worked in a accounting and medical records. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lexington, KY.
In addition to her husband, Robert, Karen is survived by two daughters; Elizabeth Ann Combs (Tommy) of Lithia, FL and Angela Marie Koester (Klay) of Charleston, SC, her parents; Jerry Allen and Janet Fritts Gale; three brothers; Mark Gale (Brenda), Randy Gale (Deanna) and Steve Gale (Jules) along with two grandchildren; Ainsley Combs and Asher Combs.
Services for Mrs. Kuntz will be10:00AM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danville, IL with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Danville, IL. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00PM Thursday, May 16, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 516 Pasadena Drive, Lexington, KY 40503. Howard McCord Simpson
Howard McCord Simpson, 89, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at The Veterans Hospital, Leestown Road in Lexington. Mr. Simpson was born on March 28, 1930 in Madison County, the son of the late Elwood Park and Nancy Deatherage Simpson.
He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of First Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Madison County 4-H Council and an avid UK Wildcat and Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
He will lovingly be remembered by his two daughters, Debbie Simpson Kelley (David) and Robin Simpson Kacmarcik (Dave); three grandchildren: Brandon Kelley, Dustin Kelley (Cidney) and Stone Kacmarcik; one great-grandchild: Cartwright Howard Kelley; his sister: Kathryn Simpson Cosby as well as three nieces and a nephew.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Fort and Bro. John McCord officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Mabel Louise Caudill
Mabel Louise Schooley Caudill, 96, of Richmond, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2019, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center. She was born in Owensville, Ohio on October 5, 1922 to the late Orville and Ruth Rust Schooley.
Mabel was a homemaker and a member of the Crab Orchard Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Bill Caudill (Mary); one sister, Mary Courtot; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a host of other extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Eulas Caudill (d. 1992); one son, Ken Caudill; two brothers, Ralph Schooley and Orville Schooley, Jr.; and two sisters, Emirna Riley, and Ida Boothby.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:30 PM on Friday, May 17, 2019, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, W. Main St., Richmond. Burial will follow in the Eldridge Cemetery in Morehead, Kentucky. Visitation will be from 6-9 PM Thursday, at the funeral home.
Maywood (Ward) Gabbard was born October 21, 1943 in Jackson County and departed this life Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 75 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Vernis & Lizzie (Stewart) Ward.
Maywood is survived by two children, Michele Gabbard of Gray Hawk and Steven Gabbard of Frankfort. She is also survived by three brothers, Harlan (Pam) Ward of Tyner, Bernard (Brenda) Ward of Tyner, Harold (Merly) Ward of Annville and by three sisters, Barbara (Randall) Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Ruth (Robert) Burch of Salt Lake City, Utah and Marti (Tim) Roberts of Annville. She was blessed with a host of nieces and nephews and by a special friend Wayne Million of Kingston.
Maywood was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Hershel Powell was born March 11, 1932 in Jackson County and departed this life Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 87 years of age. He was the son of the late Albert & China (Turner) Powell.
Hershel is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Dennis) Poffenbarger of Arcanum, OH and Sonya Burch of Brunswick, GA. He is also survived by a brother, Arnold Powell of Sand Gap. Hershel was blessed with four grandchildren, Daniel Poffenbarger, Joseph Cernevicius, Brandon Burch & Jennifer Burch and by seven great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Hershel was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Powell and by three brothers, Bert B. Powell, Thurman Powell and Vivan Eugene Powell.
Graveside service 2:00 PM Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Hellard Cemetery with Bro. Harold Hays officiating. Lakes Funeral Home McKee was in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Cole Troutman was born October 2, 1934 in Madison County and departed this life Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville, being 84 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Wiley Cole & Allie (Roberts) Cole.
Georgia is survived by a son, Dan Troutman of Danville; by a grandson, Brandon Troutman and by two great grandchildren, Jaysa & Natalie. She is also survived by her sister, Bernice Holcomb.
In addition to her parents, Georgia was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Troutman; by a son, Jeffery Troutman and by two sisters, Jeanette Vickers and Loula Cole.
Georgia’s pride and absolute joy is her family. In particular, she loves her sons, her grandson, Branden, and her great grandchildren, Jaysa and Natalie.

Juanitta Wilson Welborn was born September 15, 1934 in Hamilton, OH and departed this life Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Owsley County Health Care Center in Booneville, being 84 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Everett (Eb) Wilson and Irene (Smith) Wilson.
Juanitta is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Buster Welborn of Tyner. They had been best friends since she was 11 years old.
In addition to her husband, Juanitta is also survived by two sons, James Barry & Janet Welborn of Corbin and Jeffery Scott Welborn address unknown; three siblings, Bernice (Jerry) Wyrick of McKee, Peggy (Tom) Wilson of Sand Gap and Darrell (Nancy) Wilson of Richmond and by her in laws Jerry (Jane) Welborn of IN, Corrine (Melvin) Price of OH and Betty (Bill) Bowers of OH. Juanitta was blessed with three grandchildren, Barry Wayne Welborn of Corbin, James Brian (Jessica) Welborn of Rockholds and William Scott (Lori) Welborn of NC; by three great grandchildren, Trevor Welborn of Corbin, Taylor Welborn of Corbin and Brayden Welborn of Rockholds and by several nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Other than her parents, Juanitta was also preceded in death by in laws, James Basil (Evon) Welborn.
Juanitta loved gardening, farmers market and her family and friends.
