Ray Gabbard

Ray Gabbard

Ray Gabbard, age 75, husband of Jean Lunsford Gabbard, of Brodhead, KY, passed away on April 10th, 2019 at his home in Brodhead, KY. Ray was born in Berea, KY; Mar. 17th, 1944 a son of the late Harry Raymond Gabbard, and the late Ruth Pigg Gabbard.

Ray was a carpenter by trade. He was a member of Skaggs Creek Baptist Church, and he found great joy in his family, fishing and gardening.

Those left to celebrate his life are: his wife: Jean Lunsford Gabbard; his children: Jeff Gabbard (Tena) of Berea, KY; Bryan Gabbard (Malinda) of Berea, KY; Ben Gabbard (Lisa) of Berea, KY; Adrienne Moberly (Steve) of Richmond, KY; and Brienne Anzures (Nathan) of Brodhead, KY; his grandchildren: Shelby Brooks (Mark), Sydni Childres (Rick), Bethany Rae Gabbard-Mills (Tyler), Savannah H. Gabbard, Kelsey Gabbard, Chelsea Duff (Brent), Connor VanWinkle and Keely VanWinkle; great-grandchildren: Griffin, Lilly and Wyatt; a sisters: Margaret (A.D.) Rose and Joyce (Dean) Sowder; as well as a host of many friends and neighbors. His special fur-babies; Taz, Radar.

Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by Jesse Gabbard, Amy Hart, Betty Lamb, Dorothy Gabbard and Thelma Cope.

There will be private Family services, per his request.

James Stanley

James Stanley

James “Darrell” Stanley, age 61, husband of 40yrs to Donna “Jeannie” Stanley, passed away Wednesday April 10, 2019 at his residence in East Bernstadt, KY. Darrell was born June 24, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio to Donna Williams Stanley and the late Jimmy Dean Stanley.

Darrell was a Retired Veteran of the US Army. He loved the outdoors, working outdoors for himself and others and being of the Christian faith he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to everyone he met.

Other than his father Darrell was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Dale Stanley.

Other than his wife Darrell is survived by four children, Darren Stanley, Jason Stanley and his wife Elizabeth, Nikki Stanley, Brittany Blanton and her husband Chris, one sister, LaTonya Hager, eleven grandchildren, Kyle Stanley, Sierra Stanley, Abby Stanley, Jacob Stanley, Owen Stanley, Jackson Stanley, Celia Stanley, Emma Huffman, Raleigh Wilhoit, Eli Wilhoit, Gage Blanton, and one great grandchild, Elijah Hamblin.

Funeral Services will be 1:00PM Monday April 15, 2019 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Stanley officiating. Entombment will follow in Berea Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be 6-9PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Darren Stanley, Kyle Stanley, Jason Stanley, Jacob Stanley, Chris Blanton, David Williams, Eddie Blevins, and Donnie Chestnut. Honorary pallbearers are John David Stanley, Larry Brummett, and Bobby Land.

Melvin Shane Farris

Melvin Shane Farris

Melvin Shane Farris, age 39, passed away Sunday April 7, 2019 at his residence in Berea, KY. Shane was born November 7, 1979 in Richmond, KY.

Being mechanically inclined Shane enjoyed working with his hands, repairing cars and trucks. He also enjoyed photography. Pictures of sunrise and sunsets were his favorite.

Shane is survived by his mother, Velma Ruth Farris, two daughters, Autumn Farris, Gabriel Farris, one aunt, Brenda Farris, two uncles, Elmer Thomas Farris, Ronald Farris, special cousin, Lashanda Martin, special great aunt, Joretta Hill, and a host family and friends.

Shane was preceded in death by grand parents Elmer and Joyce Farris.

Memorial service will be 7:00 PM Tuesday April 16, 2019 at Davis & Powell Funeral Directors with Rev. Ray Reed officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.

James Preston Chasteen

James Preston Chasteen

James Preston Chasteen, age 81 of Richmond, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 9, 2019. James was born in Rockcastle County to the late Cal and Myrtle Abney Chasteen.

He was a retired Staff Sargent of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving companion, Odessa Burton; his two brothers, Bruce Chasteen and Donald Chasteen and one sister Francis Conn.

He is survived by his three children, Ronald, Michelle and Jennifer Lynn Chasteen; two sisters, Phyllis Vos and Lois McHone; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3pm, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Lakes Funeral Home Berea. Burial will be with full military honors at Chasteen Cemetery in Rockcastle County. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 12pm until 3pm.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Dooley, Jimmy Lee Dooley, Matt Stephens, Frank Napier, Bobby Chasteen, and Bill Chasteen.

John Edgar Gilbert

John Edgar Gilbert

John Edgar Gilbert, age 66 of Berea, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at St. Joseph Hospital in Berea. John was born in Berea, to the late Edgar Armstrong and Emma Ozella Gilbert.

He was a farmer and retired mail carrier for the US Postal service. He is a member of the First Christian Church of Berea and a member of the Kingston Masonic Lodge #315 F&AM.

John is survived by his three children, Daniel (Terri) Gilbert, Patrick Andrew (Suzanne) Gilbert, and Rebecca (Daniel) Hurst; three siblings, JT (Judith) Gilbert, Barbara (Butch) James, and Jerry (Tammye) Gilbert; five grandchildren, Hannah Wilson, Emma Eldridge, Hensley Gilbert, Avery Gilbert, and Lillian Hurst; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 am Saturday at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with the burial following in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-9 pm at the funeral home. Masonic services will begin at 7pm.

Paul Edward French

Paul Edward French age 77, husband of Myrtle Moore French, died Sunday April 7, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY. Paul was born in Berea to the late James Wesley and Cora Wilmot French.

Paul was also preceded in death by his daughter Marlene Stamper and several brothers and sisters.

Paul is survived by his wife of 53 years Myrtle Moore French, their children James French, Christina House, Danny Callahan, Lois Tucker, and Billy Callahan, 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 11, 2019 at 1 pm at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Bro. Darren Slone officiating. The family will receive friends at 11 am Thursday at the funeral home.

Kimberly Hilbert

Kimberly Marie VanWinkle Hilbert, 28, of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. She was born in Madison County, Kentucky on December 5, 1990 to Phyllis Childress VanWinkle and the late Milton Eugene VanWinkle.

Kim enjoyed fishing, and spending time with her family, especially making memories with her daughter.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by: her husband, Logan Hilbert; her daughter, Heaven Hilbert; one sister, Melanie Lee (Brian) and a host of other extended family and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, W. Main St., Richmond. Burial will follow in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Monday, at the funeral home.

Mark Allen Smith

Mark Allen Smith

Mark Allen Smith, 62, of the Union City Community of Madison County, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Compassionate Care Center.
Mark, the son of Rev. William Smith and the late Joyce Allen Smith, was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on July 22, 1956.

He was an employee of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a Media Producer and worked at Eastern Kentucky University. His hobbies were theater and photography and he was an accomplished musician. He was a member of Union City Baptist Church for over 36 years where he served as the pianist. His love for his family was evident to all who knew him.

On May 17, 1997, Mark united in marriage to Theresa Saylor Smith. They had been married for 21 years.

In addition to his wife and father, he is also survived by two daughters: Allyson Jordan of Richmond and Melissa & Daniel Blevins of Richmond; his son: Joseph Figeley of Lexington; his brother: Samuel & June Smith; three sisters: Maryanne & Junior Brandenburg, Kim & Jeff Masters and Missy & John Covington; five grandchildren: Colby Figeley (the son of Nicole), Olivia Figeley (the daughter of Jill), Dallas Lee (the son of James), Dixie Blevins and Joseph “Dax” Blevins and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at Union City Baptist Church, 2502 Doylesville Rd, Richmond, with Rev. David King officiating. Private burial will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Friday at the church. Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virgil Isaacs

Virgil Isaacs

Mr. Virgil Isaacs, known as “Groundhog” to many friends, age 89, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Compassionate Care Center. Mr. Isaacs, the son of William Carlos Isaacs and Hazel Murphy Isaacs, was born in Foxtown, Kentucky on December 23, 1929.

He retired from IBM and enjoyed hunting and gardening. He was a US Army Veteran and served during the Korean Conflict.

In November 1957, Mr. Isaacs united in marriage to Garnet Rose Moore Isaacs who preceded him in death on October 15, 2013.

Survivors include: two sons: Randall & Marjorie Isaacs of Richmond and Aaron & Tara Isaacs of Louisville; his brother: Lonnie Isaacs; four sisters: Farry & Sam Hawley, Wilma Lakes, Wanda & Ed Blankenship and Brenda & Russell Brockman; two grandchildren: Daniel Isaacs and Jarred Isaacs; two sisters-in-law: Melissa Isaacs and Linda Isaacs and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Isaacs was also preceded in death by two brothers: Ivan Isaacs and Orbin Isaacs.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, April 12, 2019 at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Lainhart officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Isaacs, Jarred Isaacs, Russell Brockman Derek Humfleet, Brian Blankenship, Danny Ballinger, Derek Humfleet and Brian Blankenship.

Zella Ray Vickers

Mrs. Zella Ruth Ray Vickers, 85, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 8, 2019 at Baptist Health – Lexington. Mrs. Vickers, the daughter of William Russell Ray and Ruth Middleton Ray, was born in Madison County on October 14, 1933.

She had worked as a housekeeper and had attended Kings Tabernacle. Her family and her dog, Peanut, were the loves of her life. Many children have known the love she had to show as she babysat them in her home. She was a collector of bells and had accumulated over 400 of them. She was also an Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed working her puzzles.

She united in marriage to John Wesley Vickers and was preceded in death by him in 1972.

Survivors include: her brother: James Russell Ray; five sisters: Anna Marie Carpenter, Virginia Ilene Marshall, Mona & Joe Parker, Mary Louise & Larry Rison and Pauline & Gene Kelly; her nieces and nephews and all the children she has babysat throughout the years.
Mrs. Vickers was also preceded in death by two brothers: Sam Wilson Ray and William Moss Ray Estes and her sister: Margaret Brock.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 PM Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Greg King officiating. Burial will follow in Flatwoods Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Charles “PeeWee” Brock, Shawn Brock, Jeremy Young, John Young , Brandon Moore, David Ray and Antoine Garrett.

Brittany Biggs

Brittany Nicole Hiatt Biggs, 31 years of age of Waco, formerly of Pikeville passed away Monday, April 8, 2019 in Richmond. She was born March 20, 1988 in Pikeville to Jim Hiatt and his partner, Melissa Bentley of Collins and Martha Adkins Gabbard of Richmond.

She is preceded in death by her step mother; Ruthie Hiatt, maternal grandparents; Dewey and Rosie Adkins.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband; Kenneth DeWayne Biggs of Waco, two daughters; Skylar Biggs, Brooklyn Biggs, one son; Payton Biggs, one brother; Derrek (Dtrain) Hiatt of Collins, one sister; Brittany Staggs of Hopkins Fork, Paternal grandparents; Melvin and Culla Newman of Mud Creek and a host of loving family.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at the Hall and Jones Funeral Home with Solid Rock Ministers officiating. Visitation will be at the Hall and Jones Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Wednesday with services Wednesday at 7:00 PM with Solid Rock Church officiating and services Thursday at 7:00 PM with Pilgrim Prayer Old Regular Baptist officiating. Funeral services will also be held Saturday at 2:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home with burial following in the Flatwoods Cemetery in Waco.

Janie Ruth Sparks, age 84, of Elliston Road in Richmond, passed away Friday, April 12, 2019, at her home following a long illness. She was born July 18, 1934 in Lee County and was the daughter of the late Sherman Barrett and Nannie Jones Barrett Dozier.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Waco Pentecostal Tabernacle. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.

Jewel Dean Sons

Jewel Dean Cole Sons, age 83, of Walling Road in Irvine, passed away Monday, April 8, 2019, at the Compassionate Care Center following a short illness. She was born December 7, 1935 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Burton Estill and Alice Rader Cole.

She was a homemaker and a member of the White Oak Church of God where she active in the Ladies Home Mission. She was also a former member of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 12, 1 PM at the White Oak Church of God by Bro. Glydon Woosley. Burial will be at the Dunaway Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 PM Thursday at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 12 PM Friday at the Church.

Charles E. Terry

Charles E. Terry

Dr. Charles E. Terry, born in Jackson KY, was the son of Omeda Terry, teacher and Kentucky Mother of the Year and Elmer J. Terry, teacher and Kentucky State Representative.

He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Dr. Terry moved his family to Irvine, KY in 1966 where he opened Estill Medical Clinic along with his partner, Dr. Virginia Wallace. For 45 years Dr. Terry tirelessly dedicated his services to his friends, the people of Estill County. He was one of the first doctors to practice at the Estill County Hospital and served as Medical Officer with the Kentucky National Guard. He was active in local politics, worked diligently to restrict the dumping of toxic waste in the local landfill and always encouraged and exemplified healthy living.

Dr. Terry and his family were members of the Wisemantown Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his son Mark, his daughter Tracy and three siblings, Jim Terry, Mary Ellen Little and Betty Martin.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Brenda Napier Terry and three granddaughters, Jennifer, Sarah and Allie, and sister Chris Wright of Richmond, KY. He is also survived by his nephews Todd Childers, Mike Childers, Luke Wright and nieces Rae Wright and Lorah Shackelford.

Visitation will be Saturday April 13, 2019 from 1pm to 4pm at First Christian Church on Main St, Irvine with the service at 4pm. A private burial will follow at Mountain Memorial Cemetery.

Novella Joy Steele

Novella Joy Steele

Novella Joy Steele was born January 5, 1929 in Laurel County and departed this life Sunday, April 7, 2019 at her residence, being 90 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Pascal & Mae (Tackett) Gentry.

Novella is survived by her son, James Steele and his wife Carmiletta; by her granddaughter, Tracie Steele Van Winkle and by her great grandson, Ethan Van Winkle. She is also survived by three sisters, Doris Parker of Richmond, Thelma Hellard and her husband Henry of Richmond and Velma Cates and her husband Noel of Hooven, OH.

In addition to her parents, Novella was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Steele; by her daughter, Brenda Kay Isaacs; by three sisters and two brothers.

Novella was a member of the Sand Gap Christian Church.

Funeral service 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Roger Witt officiating. Burial to follow in the Steele & Gentry Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Gary Morris, Jody Smallwood, Jesse Lear, Gary Parker, Amos Mullins & Dallas Abrams. Honorary pallbearers: Paul Alexander and Hershel Turner.
