Darryl Thomas Ballard
Darryl Thomas Ballard, son of James H. Hocker and the late Barbara Jo Ballard-Hocker was born on May 16, 1962 in Richmond, KY. He departed this life on April 5, 2019 at the Compassionate Care Center after a long battle cancer at the age of 56.
He confessed hope in Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church Richmond KY under Pastor Rev. A.C. Goodloe. Darryl was very active in his church having served as an usher, bus driver, operating the audio and video equipment, working with the men’s fellowship relay for life event, and the men’s choir. He was also active in the Richmond community by helping with the Homemakers and assisting with the Internship Program at Eastern Kentucky Universities Sewing Department. He was a member of Ashler Lodge #49 PHA F & AM, Honorable Order of The Eastern Star, The NAACP, along with many other organizations
Darryl graduated from Madison High School in 1980, where he ran track, played football and was a drummer in the marching band. He attended Morehead State University, and was a graduate of the Hart Shaffner & Marx Tailoring School in Chicago, IL Darryl’s first job was for Jimmy Barnes at Garlands in Richmond as a sales associate and Tailor, he also worked for Dawahare’s and Avon as a tailor.
In 2004 he started his own business, Darryl’s Tailoring, he has tailored for EKU, Richmond Police and Fire Departments, Madison County Sheriffs Office, Kentucky State Police, Bluegrass Army Depot, Madison Central High School, Madison Middle School, Jack’s Dry Cleaners, all citizens of Madison and surrounding counties. Darryl tailored for local restaurants, weddings, Proms, hospital attire and any other type of clothing you could think of. He also ran a shoe shining business at the tailor shop
Other than his mother he was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen and Michael Ballard.
Darryl is survived by; his father James H. Hocker, his siblings, Otis (Cynthia) Ballard, Valarie (Frank) Floyd, and Anthony (Donna) Ballard all of Richmond, KY. Nieces, Enya Ballard, Myesha Floyd, Yolanda and Shanisha Williams, Danneka Ballard, nephews, George Ballard, Franklin Sarion Floyd, Aaron Williams. Aunts, Wanda Ballard and Georgia Goodloe, uncles, Kenneth, Larry, and Tony Ballard along with a host of other relatives. Special friends of Darryl include, his co-worker and seamstress Natalie Cagle, his God Mother, Ida Smith, Frieda Orttenburger, Paley’s of Richmond and John Leeds, of Purdy’s, along with Ed Worley.
Funeral services will be 11:00AM Saturday April 13, 2019 at First Baptist Church, 425 Eastern Bypass Richmond, KY with Rev. Robert R. Blythe officiating. Visitation will be 6-9PM Friday and 10-11AM Saturday. Davis & Powell Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
