Tristyn Nowlin, Richmond native, pulled off her first collegiate championship win at the Cardinal Cup tournament this past weekend at the Univ of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, hosted by U of L. She claimed it with 6 under par with winds over 35 mph, beating her closest competitor by 3 strokes. The Illini team pulled off the Team Championship shooting one under.
“It feels incredible to finally have my first individual win, ” stated Nowlin. ” I have been close a few times, and this weekend, I was able to put three good rounds together and come out with the win.”
“As parents, we are elated and beyond proud of Tristyn. This win is even more special to her since the Illini Team claimed championship as well. This is an experience and memory to embrace a long time from now. Although she wasn’t feeling quite well and a few shots were wayward here and there, she kept focus and was remarkable at executing her recovery shots and putts for those birdies out there. The weather conditions were deplorable with high winds up to 30 mph. We told her to just continue playing with purpose, passion, patience and to keep moving forward hole to hole.
She was blessed with a smooth swing at a very young age and having her dad, Phil Nowlin, to teach her the game. Swing coach and mentor, Jason Eberle, honed that talented swing in. They are the grease behind the wheels that keep her driven to excel and to continue on after the collegiate level. Although she is majoring in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology, her goal is to play on the Symetra tour and qualify for play at the LPGA level. We can’t thank Jason and her Illini coaches for their dedication, continued support and encouragement enough to keep growing in her golf career.” quoted her mother, Beth Nowlin, a former resident of Berea.
Proud grandparents are Roger and Lynn Kelley and grandmother Johnnie Anglin all of Berea.
The Illini team will go on to play in Dallas, Texas upcoming Monday/ Tues in the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU.
