Martha Edens Calie was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on July 28, 1988 and died on August 27, 2018. She and her family have enormous gratitude for the medical knowledge, services, advocacy, and kind care that allowed her to progress into adulthood and to live life to its fullest. Her medical team enabled Martha to embrace life and be a horse lover, a baker, music lover, volunteer, and crafter. While Martha always had medical challenges, her life was about much more than being a patient.
Martha attended Union School of the Saline Michigan Public School System until moving to Berea, KY in 1992. Martha attended Berea Community School and Model Laboratory School, in Richmond KY, where she was a member of the class of 2007. She was a member of Girl Scout Troop 1265 and greatly enjoyed the camaraderie. She discovered a passion for animals in years of horseback riding at Central Kentucky Riding for Hope where she identified herself as an equestrian. The volunteers and staff that worked with her and Chico, the 2017 Horse of the Year as named by the American Hippotherapy Association, led Martha to physical achievements and development of a sense of personal responsibility. Martha embraced functional work tasks. Her efforts in making dog treats led to the development of her microbusiness, Shoot for the Moon Animal Treats. She took great pleasure in using assistive technology to bake animal treats and in dogs and their humans associating her with their favorite canine treats. Another of her accomplishments was at the human level. Community Living Support workers have had a valuable role in Martha’s recreation, work and happiness and the quality of their huge efforts is greatly appreciated. In one case, Martha introduced a beloved assistant and friend to the gentleman who eventually became her assistant’s husband. In spit e of her challenges, Martha was a person of impact.
Martha is survived by her parents, Patrick and Mary Reeves Calie of Berea, uncles W. Roderic Edens of Greensboro, NC, Michael Calie (Mary) of Sebastian, FL and Timothy Calie of New York, and numerous cousins.
Martha was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church in Berea where she received the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.
