Barbara Barrett Belcher
Barbara Barrett Belcher, 75, wife of Jim, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 22, 2018 at her home in Berea.
Her favorite expression was “live well, laugh often, love much;” this was something she embodied each day of her life, even as her health declined in later years.
She retired from Peoples Bank and Trust Company of Madison County after 29 years of service as a teller. She was involved with the Berea chapter of Business and Professional Women for many years, had been a competitive bowler, and was a member of Berea Church of God. In retirement, she enjoyed spending her time operating a booth at the Berea Flea Market.
She was born on February 15, 1943 at the Baltimore General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, the fourth of nine children born to the late Alberta Louise (Hilliard) and James Raymond Conner. While living in Baltimore in the 1960s, she met and married her former husband, James “Pete” Bragg. His occupation ultimately led them to Berea, Kentucky, where they settled and raised their family. After their separation, they remained close friends. She later married Jim Belcher, a long-time family friend on October 30, 1998; they spent most of their 19 years of marriage enjoying retirement and grandchildren together.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Raymond Bragg, in 1979; one sister, Patricia Bonner; and four brothers: James Barrett Conner, John Jarrell Conner, James Raymond Conner, Jr., and Kevin Joseph O’Conner.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Jim Belcher; one daughter, Leslie (Chriss) Niceley; two grandchildren, Conner (Chase Fain) Niceley and Caylin Niceley; two stepdaughters, Jami Belcher and Jimmi Lynn (Billy) Willett; four step-granddaughters: Brittany (Andrew) Freeman, Lauren Willett, Sydney Willett, and Morgan Willett; and one step-great-grandson, Blake Freeman. She is also survived by three sisters: Nancy Lee (Tony) Marchione, Wendy (Rob) Bearden, and her lifelong best friend, Mary Lou Griffin.
The family expresses their most sincere gratitude to her caretaker, Mildred Bordes, and the staff of Visiting Angels and Hospice Care Plus for their exceptional and loving care.
Funeral services for Barbara Belcher will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Rev. Buford Parkerson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, May 23, 2018 from 6:00 until 9:00.
Those serving as pallbearers will be: George Hylton, Rip VanWinkle, Bobby Bishop, Michael Winget, Travis Davis, and John Sensabaugh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or to Hospice Care Plus.
