Francis Carlene Livingood
Francis Carlene (Caldwell) Livingood passed from this life into the presence of her Redeemer, Jesus Christ, on Friday, October 13, 2017 where she is more alive now than ever before. Carlene was born in Pendleton County and raised in Grant County, KY, by the late Elbert and Roberta Caldwell alongside fifteen brothers and sisters that she loved dearly.
Carlene had battled valiantly by faith against multiple sclerosis for many years, and more recently with heart issues.
Carlene had just celebrated 56 years of marriage with her husband Fred, and had stood beside him in the gospel ministry as a faithful pastor’s wife for over 50 years, where she herself had loved and ministered to so many even while dealing with personal suffering. . . she was a wounded healer. Carlene worked faithfully with ACTEENS, GA’s (Girls in Action), and the WMU (Women’s Missionary Union) within the Southern Baptist denomination. She also served as secretary for the Tates Creek Baptist Association in the early 1970s.
In her thirties, Carlene went to nursing school, receiving a nursing degree at Eastern Kentucky University, and began her nursing career at the Pattie A. Clay Hospital in Richmond, KY. Carlene then worked as Occupational and Health Safety Nurse at Sherwin-Williams, and then served as nurse and nursing director at Hospice where she ministered to dying patients and their families until she herself was physically unable to do so. To Carlene, nursing was not just a career, but a ministry.
Carlene is survived by her husband, Fred Livingood; two children, Sheri (Jeff) Rogers, of Richmond, KY, and Allen (Paula) Livingood, of Berea, KY; four grandchildren, Heather (Zack) Pennington, of Richmond, Cameron Rogers, of Richmond; Trey and Tori Livingood, of Berea; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Madison Pennington of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to remember her life and celebrate her faith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Crittenden Baptist Church, 215 Russell Dr., Crittenden, KY 41030, with Bro. Allen Livingood officiating. Burial will follow in the Crittenden Cemetery in Grant County. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Westside Baptist Church, in Berea, KY
Her grand kids and nephews will serve as active pallbearers, and her brothers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Tonya Marie Smith
Tonya Marie Lowery Smith, age 40, wife of Anthony Smith died Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was born in Vicksburg, MS., on December 31, 1976 to Elmer and Debbie Leach Lowery.
Tonya was of the Baptist faith, liked to scrapbook and had a heart to help others.
Other than her husband and parents she is survived by her children; Lyberti Fayth Smith, and Anthony Jaidyn Smith, both of Berea, KY., two sisters, Nancy Pettway and Natasha Hartley both of Mississippi. Two special friends Molly Wice and Lena Gardner also survive.
Visitation will be from 12pm to 2pm October 14, 2017 at Davis and Powell Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2pm following the visitation.
Ruth Rice Kennedy, age 92, widow of Jesse Kennedy, died Wednesday October 11, 2017 at Saint Joseph Berea. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Berea, Ky., on January 20, 1925 to the late Luther and Nannie Ballard Rice.
Mrs. Kennedy was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Berea-Middletown, she was the pianist, Sunday school teacher, active with the Women’s Missionary and the Women in White. She was also very active in the Berea community, she was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2015 for the Berea Food Bank, and in the mid 1960’s she was very active with the civil rights movement. She retired from a long career in cosmetology, and earlier in life had worked for Berea College Candy Kitchen and the Dresser Company.
Other than her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Alfred, and Richard Rice.
Mrs. Kennedy leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Anthony Wayne (Noreen) Kennedy of Louisville, KY., Gregory Lane (Denise) Kennedy of Berea, KY., four grandchildren, Eric Lane Kennedy, Brian Kennedy, Angela Kennedy, and Deron Kennedy. Two great grandchildren, Jada Decker and Mya Sumpter. Family friend Aladya Henneman and a host of nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 15, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Berea-Middletown with Rev. J.K. Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 5-7 PM at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be, Greg Kennedy, Eric Kennedy, Brian Kennedy, Lamont Cornelison, Danny Farris, and Roger Hinton.

Bobby Hacker, age 69, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at Saint Joseph East in Lexington. He was born December 28, 1947 in Clay County, Kentucky to the late Thomas Hacker, Sr., and Georgia Hacker.
Bobby was a self-employed roofer and an avid classic car collector.
Other than his father he was preceded in death by; two brothers, Gerald, and Earl Hacker and one sister, Lucy Hacker Pursley.
Bobby is survived by his mother, Georgia Hacker of Lebanon, OH., his children; Louise Tackett of Berea, KY., Cheree (Ron) Adkins of McKee, KY., Scottie (Kim) Pennington of Berea, KY., and Melinda Carter of Berea, KY., four brothers, Seldon (Dora) Hacker, Thomas Hacker, Jr. of Ohio, and Eddie Hacker of Richmond Ky., and Millard Hacker of Mount Vernon, KY., two sister, Mary Hacker Alexander, and Louise (Jim) Hacker Amburgy both of Ohio. Seven grandchildren three great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Himes officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 AM until the service.

Clarence G. Pingleton
Clarence G Pingleton age 87 of Berea passed Oct.11,2017 at Pruitt Health, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. He was born in Rockcastle County, on Jan.24, 1930 to the Late John and Nannie Wilmot Pingleton.
He served in the Korean War, He was retired from Parker Seal after 34 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Evelyn Rucker Pingleton; a son James & (Donna) Pingleton of Berea; a daughter Gail & (James) Clayton of Tunnel Hill, Ga; a grandson Jason (Kelly) Azbill of Tunnel Hill Ga. ; a granddaughter Melissa Pingleton of Berea; a great granddaughter Kaitlynne Azbill of Tunnel Hill Ga.; a step granddaughter Stephanie Clayton of Tunnel Hill, Ga. He is also survived by a brother Arnold (Ruth) Pingleton of Crab Orchard: a sister Lula Jenkins of Pensacola, Fl.; 6 nieces; 1 nephew.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Ruby Pauline Pingleton and a brother in law Carl Jenkins.

Melvin Lee Hurst
Melvin Lee Hurst, 66, of Lexington, husband of Kanda Sue Hurst passed on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Melvin was born August 8, 1951 at Knoxville, TN, the son of Roy Hurst and the late Trula Hurst.
In addition to his mother he was also preceded in death by a sister Patricia Hurst.
Melvin was a self-employed business man operating Melvin Hurst Electrical. Melvin was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an amazing man and loved by so many.
In addition to his devoted wife of forty-nine years, he is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Lee Hurst; a son Timothy Dwayne (Angela) Hurst; seven grandchildren, Miranda LeAnn Hurst, Haley DeShae Hurst, Elizabeth Renee Jones, Alexandria Marie Hardin, Timothy Peyton Hurst, Isaac Robert Hurst, Olivia Marie Hurst; one great grandchild, Whitney LeAnn Hurst; and one sister, Elizabeth Guzman.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 4 pm with Rev. Steve Shultz of Tennessee, officiating. Visitation will be Saturday at Lakes Funeral Home Berea from 2-4 pm.
Laura Ann Ballinger
Laura Ann Willis Ballinger, age 89, widow of Bert Thorpe Ballinger, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at her home. She was born in Madison County, in Panola, on July 4, 1928, to the late Robert Thomas and Sarah Francis Carpenter Willis.
Laura was a lifelong homemaker, and loved taking care of her husband and children. Laura was a member of the Holiness Faith, and attended the Berea Tabernacle Church.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, sisters, Idonia Lainhart, Mafrey Lainhart, and Lella Mae Logsdon, and brothers Edgar Willis and Raymond Willis.
Laura is survived by: her children, Bert Wayne (Veronica) Ballinger and Penny Marlene Ballinger of Berea; and two brothers, James (Bertha) Willis and Robert Willis, also of Berea.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 2pm at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Bro. John Isaacs officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm at the funeral home.
Leonard ‘Tanker’ Abrams age 77, husband of Mary Bowman Abrams of Lexington, died Monday Oct 9, 2017 in Lexington. Leonard was born in Jackson County Kentucky to the late Leonard and Ellen Malicote Abrams.
He was retired Supervisor of Grounds for the University of Kentucky and a member of the Ashland Ave. Baptist Church.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Jack, Carl and Bige Abrams.
Leonard is survived by his wife Mary Bowman Abrams, his children Deborah (Greg) Mueller, and Doug (Karen) Abrams, his sister Thelma Tester all of Lexington, his grandchildren: Eric, Beth and David Mueller, and Haley and Sydney Abrams, and his great grandson Luke Mueller
Funeral services will be Thursday Oct. 12, 2017 at 11 am at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Rev. Beth Mosier and Pastor Nate Bevier officiating, burial will be in the Hayes, Abrams, Brumagen Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday Oct. 11, 2017 from 6-9 pm at the Funeral Home.

Helen Ruth Bonzo
Helen Ruth Bonzo, 86, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was the widow of Russell Bonzo. Helen was born on July 12, 1931 in Portsmouth, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include: one son, Mike Bonzo (Kelly), of Richmond; one granddaughter, Candice Minter (Chris), of Richmond; and two great-grandchildren, Marleigh Abygail Minter, and Donte Orion Minter.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Lee Bonzo, two sisters, and one brother.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017 in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.

Richard Boyd Combess Sr.
Richard Boyd Combess Sr. 69, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington. Born October 20, 1947 in Covington, Kentucky, he was the son of Clarence Boyd and Gloria Marie Lepper Combess, both of whom preceded him in death.
He was a disabled Army veteran of the Vietnam Era who enjoyed fishing and loved classic cars. Richard was of the Catholic faith and an avid Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds fan. Most of all, his life revolved around his family.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Boyd Combess, Jr. of Richmond and Robert Boyd Combess of Berea; his daughter, Kimberly Lee Combess of Berea; three sisters, Mary Linda Ferris, Kathy Hagaman, and Carol Bridewell; grandchildren, Alexander, Paul Combess, Annalee Taylor Combess, Andrew Boyd Combess, Kameryn Lee Boyd Lawson; his significant other, Phyllis Caudill; one niece and four nephews.

Lucille Turner, age 89, of Red Lick in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at the Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness. Born on December 5, 1927 in Madison County, Kentucky, to the late Carvey and Minnie Powell Lamb.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Turner was a longtime member of the Red Lick Holiness Church. She was a homemaker, avid gardener and seamstress and had lived most of her life in Estill County.
Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Turner.
She is survived by her son, Phillip Farthing (Lizzie) of Irvine, one brother, Bill Lamb (Eunice) of Ohio; two grandchildren, Jeffery Farthing (Robyn) of Irvine and Lana Bowlin of Irvine; eight great-grandchildren, Phillip Preston Farthing, Brittany Hacker, Brooke Truett, Kristi Johnson, Chelsea Bailey, Autumn Winkler, Taylor Masters and Seth Masters; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Special regards to all of her close friends, especially Grethel Bicknell and Christina Officer.

Gary Victor Lemon
Gary Victor Lemon, 73, of Spokane, Washington died suddenly Tuesday, October 10, 2017 after arrival at Baptist Health – Richmond. Born April 4, 1944 in Wendell, Idaho, he was the son of the late Victor W. and Luceal Wilson Lemon.
Gary was a commercial insurance sales representative and an Army veteran of the Vietnam era.
He is survived by his wife, Norene L. Schuller Lemon of Spokane, WA, who was traveling with her husband at the time of his death.
Memorial services will be held and interment in the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Washington at a later date. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Donald Lee Hart
Donald Lee Hart, 70, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond. Born September 26, 1947, in Mansfield, Ohio, to Robert and Ima Jean Pritchett Hart, both of whom preceded him in death.
Don was a retired Okonite employee and of the Protestant faith. He was known as “The Quilt Guy”, as he had painted the quilts that cover many Madison County barns.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Ellen Hart; one daughter, Elizabeth Hart Campbell (Charles Stephen); granddaughter, Carrie Elizabeth Campbell, all of Richmond; one sister, Marla Jean Hood, of Walton, KY; 14 nieces & nephews and 16 great nieces & great nephews.
A celebration of life for Don will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, with Jimmy Marcum presiding. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hobbs Cemetery at Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

Gary Wayne Lewis
Gary Wayne Lewis, 34, of Richmond, died October 10, 2017, at his home. Born April 24, 1983 in Lexington, Kentucky, he was the son of Dean Lewis and Lisa Delaney Contreras.
Gary was a former manager at Hardee’s Restaurant.
In addition to his mother, Lisa Contreras of Richmond and his father Dean Lewis of Harrodsburg, he is survived by one brother, Michael Durham of Richmond and three sisters, Melissa Lear of Richmond, KY, Megan Phillips of Lancaster, KY, and Deana Williams of Perryville, KY.

Hallie Louise Griggs
Mrs. Hallie Louise Newell Griggs, 93, of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center. She was born on October 13, 1923, in Madison County to the late Dennis and Alice Todd Cain.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle. She was the widow of Mr. Johnnie Newell and Mr. Philmore Griggs.
Survivors include: her son, Ronald Gilbert “Utay” Newell (Darlene) of Waco; her daughter, Alice Marie McKinney, of Richmond; 7 grandchildren; several great, and great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, W. Main St., Richmond, with Rev. Rickey Horn officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 PM Friday, at the funeral home.

Agnes Elizabeth Wilson
Mrs. Agnes Elizabeth Wilson, age 52 of Brodhead, Ky., wife of Terry, passed away Wed. October 11, 2017 at the Rockcastle Hospital. She was born on December 19, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Kenneth Pennington and Lorean Pennington.
She was of the Protestant faith and found great joy in crossword puzzles and housework. On January 28, 1982 she was united in holy matrimony to Terry Wilson and from that union came four children: Christina, Allison, Megan and Marcus.
Those left to celebrate her life are :her husband of 35 years, Terry Wilson of Brodhead, Ky; her children: Christina Wright (David Tucker) of Mt. Vernon,Ky; Allison Noland (Nick Noland) of Richmond,Ky; Megan Wilson of Brodhead, Ky; and Marcus Wilson (Hannah Wilson) of Berea, Ky; her grandchildren: Joshua Wright, Taylor Wilson, Savannah Tucker, Adalyn Noland and Landon Tucker; her brother: Michael Pennington; her sisters: Betty and Barbara Pennington; her aunts: Christine Morreale and Mona Carlson; her uncle: Tommy Miller. As well as a host of nieces/nephews, friends and neighbors.
Besides her father, Kenneth Pennington, she was preceded in death by a grandchild: Kaitlynn Tucker; her aunt: Mary Melone and her uncle: Billy Miller.
A celebration of life service will be held Sun. October 15, 2017 from 12Noon until 8PM at 25 Cash Lane, Brodhead, Ky.
Rebecca Ann Collett
Rebecca Ann Collett, age 73, of Elm Street in Ravenna, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, at her home following a long illness. She was born October 19, 1943 in Madison County and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Nannie Cole King.
She was a retired employee of the Family Dollar Store and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. She had lived in Estill Co. all her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Collett.
She is survived by 2 Daughters Kathy Collett, Patricia Webb, 2 Sons Adam Troy Collett, Joseph King Collett & wife, Crystal all of Estill Co., 2 Sisters Nina Riley of Madison Co., Bobbie Kay Schaaf of South Carolina, 1 Brother Tony Covey of Estill Co., 9 Grandchildren Alicia Dornak, Jessica Webb, Tracye Webb, A.J. Collett, Aaron Webb, Dylan Collett, Chris Hunt, Tedra Hunt and Cheyanne Collett who was raised as her daughter, 6 Great Grandchildren Ivan Dornak, August Dornak, Kylee Canter, Mason Canter, Sofia Collett and Gabe Ryan.
She was preceded in death by 3 sisters; Edna Hall, Bessie Witt, Mary Elizabeth King and 4 brothers; Mitchell King, Jimmy King, Harold King and Charles Ray King.

Gary Wayne Baber, age 60, of High Street in Irvine passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, at his home. He was born October 14, 1956 in Madison County and was the son of the late Devoe and Wilma Hunt Baber.
He was a retired Rand McNally employee and a member of the Baptist Church. He had lived in Estill County all his life.
He is survived by His wife Rosette Masters Baber, 1 brother Steven Mitchell Baber of Estill Co.

Donald James Sheeks Sr.
Donald James Sheeks Sr. age 63, of North Sulphur Wells Road in Irvine passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017, at the Compassionate Care Center following a long illness. He was born February 6, 1954 in Bedford, Indiana and was the son of the late James Reath Sheeks and Marilyn Bussey Sheeks Mornout.
He was a retired police officer who served with the Irvine Police Department and Eastern Kentucky University. He was a member of the Panola Baptist Church and was a Kentucky Colonel. He had lived in Estill County most of his life.
He is survived by His wife Judy Ann Cockrell Sheeks, 1 daughter Melissa Puckett of North Carolina, 1 son Donald Sheeks, Jr. of Estill Co., 2 Brothers John Sheeks of Texas, David Sheeks of Florida, 3 Grandchildren Makayla Ann Sheeks, Madison Nicole Puckett and Malachi Belegy.
He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Donna Jean Sheeks.

Emma Frances Tipton
Emma Frances Tipton, age 79, of White Oak Road in Irvine passed away Monday, October 9, 2017, at her home following a long illness. She was born February 16, 1938 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late James and Callie Case Fielder.
She was a retired Carhartt, Inc. employee and a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County all her life.
She is survived by Her husband Leslie Elwood Tipton, 1 Daughter Kathy Ann Withers & husband, Leslie, 1 Son Donald R. Tipton & wife, Sandra, 4 Sisters Mary Powell, Geraldine Crowe, Lois Arthur, Diane Willis all of Irvine, 2 Brothers James Fielder of Richmond, Darrell Fielder of Irvine, 4 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Teresa Gail Estes, 1 sister, Elizabeth Crowe, 1 brother, J.W. Fielder and 1 grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 12, 11 AM at the Mt. Carmel Christian Church by Bro. Mark Pearson. Burial will be at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 PM Wednesday at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home and after 10 AM Thursday at the Church.
Ralph Carroll was born February 4, 1937 in East Bernstadt and departed this life Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 80 years of age. He was the son of the late Johnny & Opal (Redford) Carroll.
Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 57 yearse, Shelby (Sparks) Carroll of Berea and by his children, Brian Carroll and Rosemary of Taylor, S.C., Teresa Carroll Whitaker and David of Berea, William E. Atkinson and Rosa of Irvine and Roxann Atkinson and Stephen Nipper of Richmond. He is also survived by the following siblings, John Carroll and Karen of Nicholasville, Ray Carroll of Sparta, KY, Kenneth Carroll and Joyce of Virginia, Wayne Carroll and Mary of Connersville, IN, Wanda Carroll of Berea and Edna Houston and Leon of Hamilton, OH.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Carroll.
Ralph was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Funeral service 1:00 PM Monday, October 16, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. John Carroll officiating. Burial to follow in the T.M. Lakes Cemetery. Visitation will be at 6pm October 15, 2017 at the funeral home.
