Melvin Higgins, age 89, widower of Rhonda Williamson Higgins, died Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 at The Willows at Citation in Lexington, KY. Mr. Higgins was born September 26, 1927 in Magoffin County, KY to the late Troy and Bonnie Lindon Higgins.
He worked as a barber in Berea for over 62 years. Mr. Higgins served his country during WWII in the Navy and again during the Korean War in the Army. He served on the Kentucky State Board of Barbering for 22 years serving as the chair during his tenure. He also served two terms on the Berea City Council, and as a member of the Berea Housing Authority. Mr. Higgins was instrumental in obtaining the funding and approval for construction of the Clay Fee Homes. The Melvin Higgins building located behind city hall is named in his honor for his commitment and tenure with the Berea Sewer Commission. Mr. Higgins served on the Berea Cemetery Board for many years retiring in 2016. He was a member of the American Legion Cleveland Frost Post #50 and was a past recipient of the Legionnaire of the year award. He was a recipient of the CC Hensley award for his many contributions and lifetime of service to the City of Berea.
Mr. Higgins devoted his life to service to his country, community and profession. He was a much beloved father, grandfather and brother and a renowned story teller.
Other than his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters – Seldon, Ishmael, Lindon, Byron, Ray, Joe, John David, and Chandler Higgins, Fannye Bowman, and Dorothy Enfield.
Mr. Higgins is survived by his children; Scot Higgins and his wife Vicky of Cumming, GA, and Jane Higgins and her husband Richard Hopgood of Lexington, KY. Two brothers; Glen Higgins and his wife Dolores of Murfreesboro, TN, and Julian Higgins of Shalimar, FL and one sister; Thelma Powers of New Haven, CT. Three grandchildren also survive Mr. Higgins; Kimberly Condra and her husband Jeff, Travis Higgins, and Samantha Sipple.
Inurnment will be private in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, September 23rd from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home. A celebration in honor of Mr. Higgins’ life will take place at Boone Tavern Hotel from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24th.

Margaret Frances Allen
Margaret Frances Allen, age 83, widow of Charles W. Allen, III. died Thursday, September 7, 2017 at her home. Mrs. Allen was born March 25, 1934 in Rockcastle County, KY., to the late Vollie and Lecy T. Mullins McCollum.
She was of the Holiness faith, loved to sew and make quilts. She also loved to fish and camp.
Other than her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Ike, Bea, Harley, and John McCollum and 3 sisters, Susie Rachel Hutchins, Mae Lamb, and Dorothy Wynn. A step daughter Janet Mildred Allen also preceded her.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her step children; Charles W. (Charlene) Allen, IV of Austin, IN., Robert E. (Lola) Allen, of Berea, KY., Mary Lee (Brian) Rittenhouse, of Frisco, TX., David H. (Brenda) Allen of Richmond, KY., and James S. Allen of Richmond, KY. 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Monday, September 11, 2017 at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Charles W. Allen, IV officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Rockcastle County. Visitation will be Sunday, September 10, at the funeral home.
Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Lewis Dean Dick
Lewis Dean Dick, age 70, of Berea, died Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Compassionate Care Center in Richmond after long illnesses. He was born October 23, 1946 in Waynesburg KY, son of the late James E. and Ruby I. New Dick.
A United States Navy Veteran during the Vietnam War, a welder for General Electric Aircraft Division, an avid boater, speedboat engine builder, painter and enthusiast, he enjoyed Sci-Fi, Country and Bluegrass music. He is dearly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include 6 children, David Dick (Sara), Tabitha Oyediran (Yemi), Adrienne Dick, Monica Dick, Shekinah Dick and Alexander Dick; one brother, Leonard Dick; eight grandchildren, Isaac, Grace, Tristan, Sean, Scarlett, Ryan, Issabella and Alexa.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister Diane Dick.
Funeral Service will be 12:00 Noon Friday, September 8, 2017 at Reppert Funeral Home. Visitation at 11:00 AM until time of service. Burial with Military Rites at 2:30 PM in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
Irene Singer Jordan
Irene Singer Jordan, 97, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Baptist Health – Richmond. Born February 3, 1920, in Madison County, she was the daughter of William and Ollie Isaacs Singer, both of whom preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jordan was the widow of Lee Jordan, a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Richmond.
Survivors include one daughter, Anna Hale of Richmond, one brother, Bill Singer; and four grandchildren, Douglas Hale, Lynn Hurd, Tanya Strickland, Elizabeth Doll. She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Ethel English, Joy Stagner, Eva Hurt, and Christine Agee, as well as, five brothers, Eugene, David, Glenn, Robert, and John Singer.
There will be no public visitation and a graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Richmond Cemetery, with Bro. Bill Fort officiating. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ngoc Duc Huynh
Ngoc Duc Huynh, 93, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Baptist Health – Richmond. He was born March 30, 1924, at Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen, Vietnam.
He was a retired commercial fisherman. Mr. Huynh was a member of the South Vietnam Republican Army. He followed his Lord in baptism and was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
A funeral Mass for Mr. Huynh will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 8, 2017 at St Mark Catholic Church in Richmond, with Father Tom Farrell officiating. Visitation will be after 2:00 PM until service time on Friday at the Church. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ray Shearer, age 59 of Lexington, died Sunday, September 3, 2017 at his home. He was born in Zama, Kanazawa, Japan on October 15, 1957 the son of Doan and Suiko Shibano Shearer.
He had been a carpenter.
He is survived by his children, Shawn Shearer of Lexington, Tonia Durham and Shannon Durham, both of Berea, and Rayna Milsap of Cartersville, GA; and five brothers and sisters, Lewis Shearer and Carolyn and Ben Johnson, both of Berea, Roy Shearer and Janet and Jeff Rader, both of Mt. Vernon, Don Shearer of Murrieta, CA, and Dean Shearer of Richmond. Also surviving are five grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Sandy Shearer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Bradley.

Billy Joe Shafer
Billy Joe Shafer, 63 husband of Teresa, departed this life on Monday, September 4th, 2017 at the UK Hospital. He was born on April 16th, 1954 in Madison County, KY to Bobby Joe Shafer and Willene (Woodall) Adams.
He had worked for the State of Kentucky Highway department and he enjoyed attending car shows, coon hunting & fishing, farming and spending time with his grandson. He was a Master Mason belonging to the Brodhead Lodge F. & A.M. #566.
Those left to celebrate his life are: his wife Teresa Shafer of Brodhead, KY; his son Eric Dale Shafer of Brodhead, KY; his mother Willene Adams of Brodhead, KY; his grandson Lucas Connor Shafer of Harrodsburg, KY; his brothers Mickey (Rita) Shafer of Mt. Vernon, KY & Roger Shafer of Brodhead, KY; his sisters Kathryn Bingham & Special Sister Deanna Adams both of Brodhead, KY; as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
Besides his father, Billy Joe was preceded in death by his Step Father Jimmy Pete Adams; son Ellis Jason Thomas and Special Aunt Jean Wilmott.
Visitation for Billy Joe will be held from 6PM-9PM on Thursday, September 7th, 2017 at the Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals with a Masonic service beginning at 7PM. Funeral Services will be conducted 12PM on Friday, September 8th, 2017 at the funeral home with Bro. Randall Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Nana Orlena Tucker
Nana Orlena Tucker, age 84, of Turpin Ridge Road in Irvine, passed away Sunday, September 3rd, at her home, following a long illness. She was born November 27, 1932, in Owsley County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Lucy Belle Simmons Childers.
She was a former employee of K-Mart and had lived in Madison County most of her life. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Robert Lee Tucker.
She is survived by A Son Robert Lee Tucker Jr. of Estill Co., 1 Brother Tom Childers of Ohio.
In addition to her husband, she is also preceded in death by 1 Son, Daniel Jay Tucker; 2 Sisters, Clara Childers, Betty Childers; 5 Brothers, Bob, Joe, Charles, Doug, and Tom Childers, and a Grandson, Robert Lee Tucker III.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday 11 AM at the Tucker Cemetery.
Kaylynn Nova Marcum
Kaylynn Nova Marcum passed peacefully in the arms of her loving parents, on September 3, 2017 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington, KY. Nova was born August 31, 2017 in Richmond, KY. During her three short days here on earth she touched so many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends. Her life was brief gift to us that will live on in our hearts forever.
Nova was the daughter of Austin Marcum and Cierra Hembree. She is also survived by her grandparents, Ricky (Della) Marcum, Frank (Kay) Hembree; great grandparents, Madline Marcum, Earl (Mammie) Reed, Joe (Leona) Hembree, Marie Shelton, Charles (Betty) Chasteen; Aunts and uncles, Cheyene Hembree, Frankie Hembree, Brad (Tiffany) Marcum and Shannon (Melissa) Marcum.
Funeral service 2:00PM Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Everett Smith officiating. Burial to follow in the Charles Chasteen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brad Marcum, Shannon Marcum, Zach Chasteen, Dylan Flannery, Zach Jones and Willie Young. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Flannery, Ricky Marcum, Stephen Martin, Tony Thompson, and Charles Chasteen.

Joyce Russell, age 67 was born May 28, 1950 in Jackson County and departed this life Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Baptist Health in Richmond, KY. She was the daughter of Chester Isaacs and Myrtle (McKinney) Isaacs.
Joyce is survived by two children, Nada Rose and her husband Russell of Berea and Dale Russell and his fiancé Tasha Burton of McKee; one granddaughter, Kaitlin Russell of Connersville, IN and by one great granddaughter Madeline of Connersville, IN. She is also survived by her father, Chester Isaacs of McKee, and two sisters, Shirlene Rader and her husband Marvin of McKee and Peggy Rader and her husband Ricky of McKee.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert; her mother, Myrtle Isaacs and her twin sister, Lois Moore.
Funeral service 12 Noon Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Darrell Isaacs officiating. Burial to follow in the Russell Flat Cemetery.
