Lowell L. Murray
Lowell L. Murray, age 75, husband of Peggy Baird Murray, died Wednesday June 14, 2017 at his home.
Lowell was retired from the City of Berea where he had recently retired as Chief Electrical Inspector for the Codes Office, and he was also a retired Fire Chief 1968-72, having also worked for the Berea College Fire Department, and was Director of the Civil Defense for Berea in 1972. He was a member of the National Association of Fire Chief and Electrical Inspectors, had been a teacher at the Kentucky Technical School in Garrard County, was the owner of Murray’s Electric and worked in TV and Radio repair. He was a member of the Berea Church of Christ, a Mason, and a Berea College graduate class of 1964.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Florence Lewis Murray and his sister, Penelope Murray.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Peggy Baird Murray, whom he met at Berea College, his daughters Melissa (Scott) Anderson, and Margaret Murray, and his grandchildren: Aaron (Kayla) Anderson, Madeline and Macie Merrick.
Funeral services for Lowell will be Saturday June 17, 2017 at 11 am at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Kenny Davis, Cletus Maricle, and Steve Moss, and Ed Harber officiating. Burial will be in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-9 pm at the funeral Home with Masonic Rites at 8 pm.
Pallbearers will be John Scott Anderson, Aaron Scott Anderson, Jeremy Bryant, Ed Harber, Christopher Hymore, John David Noe, Ronnie Hacker, and Cletus Maricle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rick Conn, Jerel Hymore, Donald Bryant, Jerome Baird, John Baird, John Stephenson, Roy Curtis, and Randy Rigsby and all members of the Berea Fire Department, past and present.
Betty Lou Isaacs
Betty Lou Isaacs, age 73 of Berea, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Betty was born in Jackson County to the late Eunice and Rosie Clemmons McKinney.
She was a homemaker and a member of the holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Austin Isaacs, two children Edna Rose and Jackie Dale Rose, and several siblings.
She is survived by six children Wanda (Craig) Hisle, James (Teresa) Rose, Michael Ray (Sharon) Isaacs, Peggy Sue (Ronnie) Brockman, Melissa (Johnnie) Isaacs, and Denny Isaacs; one sister Elsie Harrison; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Betty’s wishes were to have a graveside service at Sinking Valley Cemetery. Services will be 11am, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the cemetery.
Curtis Reppert, 80, of Berea, died Sunday, June 11, 2017 at St. Joseph East in Lexington of complications following a heart attack. He was a Madison County native born June 10, 1937, son of the late Robert and Lucille Gilliam Reppert.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran (Military Police Unit), graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a B. S. in Education (Class of 1961) and had been a resident of Berea most of his life. Curtis was a member of American Legion Post 50, Oleika Shrine Temple, Berea Masonic Lodge #617 F&aM (50 + years), and an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. He was a retired Berea College employee, employee of the Madison County School System since 1996 at Madison Southern High School where he was active in athletics and athletic events. For many years he served as an Election Officer. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and also attended Berea United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 52 Years, Margaret Sandifer Reppert; 2 children, Sandy L. Reppert-Lanham, Brian Curtis Reppert; 3 siblings, Wanda (Bill) Wren, Ruby (Donnie) Hale, Belinda Reppert; 1 granddaughter, Briana Lanham; special aunt, Myrt Wilson; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Funeral Service 1:00 pm, Thursday, June 15, 2017 in Madison Southern High School Gymnasium with Bro. Vaughn Rasor, Bro. Achee Eads and Bro. William Dooley officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Berea Cemetery. Visitation 6:00 – 9:00 pm Wednesday in Madison Southern Gymnasium. Reppert Funeral Home and Cremation Service entrusted with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be: William Wren, Wesley Williams, Chad Kidwell, David Gilliam, Shane Buttry, John Lovell. Barbara J. Gross
Mrs. Barbara J. Gross, 76, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center. She was born in Richmond, Kentucky on January 11, 1941, to the late Brownie and Minnie Holland James.
Barbara attended the Fountain Park First Church of God in Richmond over 40 years. She was a retired employee of Robinson Tool & Die / Irvine Industries where she worked for over 40 years and made many lifelong friends. Nana Barb loved on many young people in the last 15 years – each knowing they were her favorite.
Mrs. Gross is survived by: her two sons, Jerry Gross, and Tim Gross (Melissa); grandsons, Dalton and Dustin Gross; brother, Bobby James (Madrue); very special in-laws, J.A. and Pat Gross, and Helen James; many nieces and nephews are included in her large and loved family.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Gross, and her brother, Brownie James, Jr.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Fountain Park First Church of God, 5000 Secretariat Dr, Richmond, with Rev. Elder Goble and Rev. Ben Jordan officiating. Mrs. Mertie Ashcraft Jordan, 70, widow of Frank Jordan, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 14, 2017, at the Signature Healthcare Nursing Home in Taylorsville, KY. Mrs. Jordan was born in Beattyville Kentucky on August 19, 1946 to the late Gid and Rosella Mays Ashcraft.
She was a self employed house cleaner, and loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by: her son, Frank Jordan II (Judy); one brother, Omer Ashcraft; two grandchildren, Shelbi Poole (Stephen), and Gideon Jordan; two great-grandchildren, Cohen and Kyndle Poole, as well as one on the way. She is also survived by a host of other family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: her daughter, Angelia “Angel” Jordan; three brothers, Robert, James and Willie; and two sisters, Ferby and Mary.
Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 PM. Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, 328 W. Main St., Richmond. Burial will follow in the Bluegrass Memorial Gardens in Lexington. Visitation will be after 11AM Saturday, at the funeral home.
Effie C. Ballard
Effie C. Ballard, 60, wife of Freddie Ballard, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Effie was born on November 23, 1956 in Madison County, the daughter of the late Homer and Nancy Hicks Conner.
For the last 27 years, Effie and her husband Fred, have served the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), she as an ordained Minister and Fred as an ordained Bishop. Currently they were serving the Central City Church of God in Central City, Kentucky. She was a former employee of Eastern Kentucky University.
Survivors include her husband: Pastor Freddie S. “Fred” Ballard; two sons: Jared S. Ballard (Amber) and Jason B. Ballard (Felicia); four grandchildren: Bryan S. Ballard, Kayla R. Ballard, Jason Elijah Ballard and Krystina D. Ballard; three great-grandchildren: Neveah R. Ballard, Michael S. Ballard and Peyton M. Combs; one brother: Homer Conner Jr. (Alice); two sisters: Katie Gross and Lena Parrish as well as several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by a sister: Joyce Florence, and two brothers, Tom Conner and Howard Conner.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Pastor Steven D. Leach and Rev. Phillip Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lucille Shanks Brock, 84, of Richmond, passed away early Monday morning, June 12, 2017. She was born in Madison County on April 12, 1933, to the late George and Zepra Riddell Shanks.
She was a homemaker and a long time member of the White Hall Holiness Church.
Mrs. Brock is survived by: two sons, David Michael Brock (Linda), and Stevie Brock (Nora Rose); six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Patty Brock and Susan Bell; as well as a host of friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Brock; a son, William Darryl Brock; three infant children; and a granddaughter, Tiffany Nichol Brock.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11AM Friday, June 16, 2017, at the White Hall Holiness Church, 3561 Colonel Rd, Richmond, with Bro. Elvie Evans officiating. Ginita Legvold Walton, 76, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Baptist Health -Lexington surrounded by her loving family. Ginita was born November 12, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to the Thurman Legvold and Pearl Lester Legvold.
She attended Madison Model High School in Richmond and retired from Westinghouse – Phillips Lighting.
Ginita was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Legvold of Florida.
Ginita is survived by a daughter, Karen Dennis (Brian) of Lexington, KY; a son, Kenny Walton (Jo Ellen) of Richmond, KY; four grandchildren, Tony Cecil (Jen) of Cincinnati, OH; Kristina Amburgey (Chris) of Georgetown; Carly Dennis (Matt) of Lexington; Lindsey Walton of Richmond and two great-grandchildren, Kamryn Amburgey and Lucas Cecil.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Brian Dennis, Tony Cecil, Chris Amburgey, and Matt Dennis.

Lonnie Lewis Miller
Mr. Lonnie Lewis Miller, age 59 of Berea, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at his residence, surrounded by family.
He was born on May 26, 1958 in Madison County, a son of Alonzo and Mary Frances Cope Miller. He had been a carpenter; who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was of the Holiness faith. On December 25, 1975, he was united in marriage to Denise Chasteen and from that union came two children: Ronnie Lee and Bobby Joe.
Those left to celebrate his life are his wife of 41 years, Denise Miller of Berea, Ky.; his son: Ronnie (Felicia) Miller of Berea, Ky; his grandchildren: Andrew Jacob Miller, Nathan Lee Miller and Rylan Wesley Miller; his brothers: William Arthur Miller of Berea; Ronnie Dale (Ann) Miller of Berea, Ky; and Larry Kent (Lisa) Miller of Florida; his sister: Shirley Marie Tipton of Berea, Ky; As well as a host of nieces/nephews, friends and neighbors.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Bobby Joe Miller and mother-in-law: Betty Chasteen.
Graveside services will be Thurs. June 15th, 2017 at 3PM at the Chasteen Family Cemetery with Bro. Bruce Alcorn officiating.
Benjamin Walker West
Benjamin Walker West, 35, of Berea, KY transitioned to eternal life on Saturday, June 10, 2017. Ben was born September 2, 1981. He was the son of Rufus William West (Mary Ann West) and Rene Brandenburg West. He was a United States Army veteran.
Ben leaves to cherish his memories of a loving husband of 15 years his wife, Latanya Marie West. He was the proud father of 4 children: Deondre Michael Tate, Tionna Marie Tate, Tay Shawn Douglas West, and Jayla Nicole West. His favorite mother-in-law Teresa Gordon. Siblings with a lot of fond memories: Sheri Nicole Dillon-Miller, Matthew Trever West and William Dee West. Maternal grandmother Jesse Mae Hardy Brandenburg.
Ben was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Rufus Walker West and Georgia Frances West. Maternal grandparent Clayton Brandenburg. His brother Theodore “Coty” Michell West. His favorite father-in-law Ray Douglas Gordon. And his sister-in-law Kimberly Ann Gordon.
Ben enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ben will be missed by all that had an opportunity to make his acquaintance.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 15, 1 PM at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Willie Hargus Gordon. Burial will be at the Flatwoods Cemetery. Friends may call between 6 and 9 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

William P. McKinney
William P. McKinney better known as Billy was born March 29, 1940 in Foxtown, KY and departed his life Thursday June 15. 2017 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY being 77 yrs. of age. He was the son of the late Jake and Nellie (Moore) McKinney.
Billy is survived by his wife, Ruth (Rader) McKinney of McKee, KY, and by his children, Kathy Spurlock and her husband Phillip of Annville, KY, Billy Wayne McKinney and his wife Shelley of McKee and Nellie Rose and her husband Matthew of McKee. Billy was blessed with three grandchildren, Ethan Spurlock and his wife Tiffany, Justin Rose and his wife Ashley and Brandi Gilbert and her husband Denver and one great granddaughter Raina Noel Spurlock. He is also survived by a sister, Hazel Huesing of Hamilton, OH and a brother Walter McKinney of Oliver Springs, TN.
In addition to his parents, Billy was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Carolyn Jean McKinney and by two brother and nine sisters.
Billy was of the Holiness Faith and attended the Macedonia Holiness Church.
Graveside services 2:30 P.M. Friday June 16, 2017 at the Steel Cemetery, McKee, KY with Bro. Mike McKinney officiating. Lakes Funeral Home McKee was in charge of arrangements.
