Margaret Marie Jackson Thornton Blythe, age 94, died November 21, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Blythe was born to the late Joseph and Hattie Curtis Jackson on March 28, 1922 in Ohio.
She was very active in her church, First Seventh Day Adventist Church at 5th & Upper Streets in Lexington, Kentucky that later moved to Lima Drive. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School, had attended Berea College and was a graduate of the U.K. Nurses training, and worked as a surgical nurse for U.K. Medical Center. Mrs. Blythe moved to Berea in 1969 and started the Midtown Community Care Home for Veterans in 1971 which is still in operation. She received a certificate of appreciation from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2002, for her exceptional commitment to the veterans she cared for. Also, she received a Great Neighbors Citation in 1999 from Woodman of The World for ministering to the needy, sick and infirmed.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Blythe of Berea, Ky., and her former husband, James Phillip Thornton, Sr., her children, Earlene Madison- Davis, James Phillip Thornton, Jr., Willard Carter Thornton, Marvin Lowell Thornton and Eva Marie Thornton.
Mrs. Blythe is survived by her daughters, Margaret Elizabeth (Benson) Thornton Matthews of Silver Springs, Maryland and Harriet Ann Thornton of Berea, KY. 13 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Thursday, December 1st, 2016 at the Lima Drive Seventh Day Adventist Church at 541 Lima Drive in Lexington, KY. With Pastor Jonathan Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the service. Davis & Powell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
