Ovie Abrams age 86 of Carrollton, formerly of Salem, Indiana, passed away Friday September 11, 2015 in Louisville. Ovie was born in Jackson County, Kentucky to the late Marion Robert and Lona Young Abrams.
He owned a greenhouse construction company and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a devoted fan of University of Kentucky basketball and an avid fan of Cincinnati Reds baseball.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one daughter Anita Hammond, and four brothers Albert, Nelson, Glenn and Russell Abrams.
He is survived by his children Jenni Abrams of Lexington, Sandi (Steve) Meadows of Carrollton, Tim (Darla) Abrams of Wayne City, IL, and Keith Abrams of Carrollton, two brothers Ray Abrams, Donnie Abrams, two sisters Alma Simpson and Wilma Dawson, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10am Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Lakes Funeral Home Berea. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Jackson County. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-9 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made directly to the funeral home.
Hobert E. Spires
Hobert E. Spires 77 of Berea passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Baptist Health in Lexington.
Hobert was born in Rockcastle County to the late Clarence and Margaret Gadd Spires.
He was a retired truck driver from Blue Grass Army Depot.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by six siblings Otis, Herman, Clarence, Clifford, Dennis Roger Spires and Irene Spires.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine Walters Spires, two sons Dwayne Eldon Spires and Michael Lee Spires, one brother Dallas (JoAnn) Spires, two sisters Mary Lee (Johnny) Todd, Virginia Humphrey, three grandchildren Brandon Spires, Latasha Spires, Courtnay Spires and six great grandchildren Courtney Burns, Kaitlyn Burns, Branson Spires, Kenzie, Katie and Kenzley Spires. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law Judy Spires and Betty Spires.
Funeral services will be 3pm Sunday September 13, 2015 at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Brother Chris Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in the Scaffold Cane Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 12-3 pm at the Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Wally Abney, Darrell Mullins, Tim Merlin, Brandon Spires, Eddie Barnett, and Jimmy Shearer.
Gilbert Ray Chasteen
Gilbert Ray Chasteen age 51 of Maple Street, passed away Monday September 7, 2015 at Madison Health and Rehabilitation in Richmond. Gilbert was born in Berea to the late Virgil and Thelma Powell Chasteen. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Henry and Nora Johnson Chasteen and maternal grandparents Jesse and Lula Burnell Powell Bullens.
He is survived by his children Joshua Chasteen and Kristal (Brandon Alexander) Chasteen, two brothers Donnie and Becky Chasteen, Eddie and Joanne Chasteen, two sisters Doris and Bimbo Robinson, Sheila and Deron Wolfe, seven nephews, seven nieces, 26 great nieces and nephews and two great-great nieces, special friends Cheryl Blankenship and Jim B. along with numerous, relatives and friends. He was especially proud of the two grandchildren that he was expecting in January and March of next year.
Funeral services will be 10am Thursday at Church on the Rock with his son Josh Chasteen officiating. Burial will follow in the Silver Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm at the church. Lakes Funeral Home Berea are handling the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be his nephews Steve, Jason, Chad and Chris Chasteen, Rockie Robinson, Brandon Lake and Ben Wolfe. Honorary bearers will be his nieces Tammy Carpenter, Kim Lovett, Stacey Davidson, Allison Chasteen, Carrianne Raider, Robyn Sowder and Breanna Calico.
John Henry Durham
John Henry Durham, age 68, of Berea, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington. A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Ralph and Dora McHone Durham.
He attended Trinity Full Gospel Church and was an Army Veteran of the Viet Nam War. He was a classic car and gun enthusiast.
Mr. Durham is survived by: his daughter, Jessica (P. J.) Madewell of Lexington; brother: Donnie (Linda) Durham of Berea; sisters: Bonnie (Hubert) Johnson of Berea, and Rose (Robert) Hayden of Richmond; grandchildren: Payton and Zayden Madewell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Durham will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Trinity Full Gospel Church with Rev. Bobby Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Durham Cemetery at Flat Gap. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Davis & Powell Funeral Home and after 12:00 p.m. Friday at the church.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Scott Blair, Troy Blair, Jonathan Prewitt, Brian Johnson, Mike Durham and Jason Durham.
Lillie McHone Brown
Lillie McHone Brown, 66, of Berea, died Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center following an illness. She was a Lexington native born November 29, 1948, daughter of the late Clyde McHone and Linda Rose McHone Hyatt, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Linda Coffey; and 1 grandson, Terry Coffey III; as well as, numerous relatives and friends.

Ricky Douglas Spears
Ricky Douglas Spears, 54, of Richmond, died on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond. He was born on June 2, 1961 in Harlan, Kentucky to the late James Douglas and Mary Roberts Spears.
Survivors include two sisters, Loma K. Bowling and Lisa R. Morgan; three half-sisters, Nancy Moore, Irene Brock and Geneva Hobbs; six half-brothers, Ralph Napier, James Napier, Eugene Napier, Lester Napier, Hurl Napier and Randy Spears; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by one step sister, Sandra Hobbs.

Elizabeth A. Whitaker
Elizabeth A. Whitaker, 74, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond. She was born June 30, 1941 in Utica, NY to Frank and Mary Lauria Carlesimo, both of whom preceded her in death.
Elizabeth was also preceded by her first husband of 24 years, Joseph Saporito. She was a retired department manager for Elder Beerman and a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Jim Whitaker of Richmond; two sons, Frank Saporito (Kim) of Georgia, Joe Saporito and one daughter, Maria Chapman, both of Ohio; one step-daughter, Toni King; four sisters, Faye Ciancaglini, Joyce Squillace, Linda Knight, and Gail Mazolli; 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a special friend, Virginia Viscosi.
She was also preceded in death by a step-son, Michael Whitaker.
Funeral mass for Elizabeth will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 12, 2015 at St. Mark Catholic Church, with Fr. Jim Sichko officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Burial will follow later at the Calvary Cemetery in New Hartford, NY.

Gladys Simpson Plummer
Gladys Simpson Plummer, 100, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the Telford Terrace in Richmond. She was born June 3, 1915, in Madison County at her home on Simpson Lane, to Joe D. and Florence Sweeney Simpson, both of whom preceded her in death along with her husband, Clarence Plummer, in 1980.
She received her Bachelor Degree from Eastern Kentucky State College, and was a former teacher in the Madison County public school system. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, a member of the Madison County Homemakers and the Society of Boonesborough, where she served three terms as President. She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Richmond.
Survivors include her nephew, Dr. Paul Williams (Mary Anne) of Jacksonville, NC; three great nieces, and her cousin, Jeanne Bond.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the service time at 1:00 PM, Friday, September 11, 2015, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Simpson, Forniss Park, K.S. Park, Ervin Yoder, Mitchell Smith, Lee Bond, Tom Henrich and Geof Ward.

Edgar “Bug” Rhodus, 88, passed away Saturday, September 05, 2015. He was born in Madison County, Ky. on September 4, 1927.
Bug was a farmer and cattle buyer. He was a hard worker who raised over 60 tobacco crops during his life and his only sport was coon hunting. He joined the Kirksville Baptist Church when he was 14 years old and remained a faithful member.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Katherine Jones Rhodus; two sons, Edgar M. Rhodus and Richard Rhodus (Pam); five grandchildren, B. J. Rhodus, Sissy Cain, Neil Rhodus, Junior Rhodus and Jessie Cocanougher; 10 Great-Grandsons and 10 Great-granddaughters; seven great-great grandchildren; two nephews, Raymond Comley, Jr. and Gary Comley.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Moody; two sisters, Ida Mae Carter and Margaret Comley; a foster brother, James “Turkey” Middleton.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at the Kirksville Baptist Church with Bro. Butch Pennington and Bro. Owen Moody officiating. Burial will follow in the Manse Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 PM Monday at the Kirksville Baptist Church. Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Carter Wesley Curry-Robertson
Carter Wesley Curry-Robertson, infant son of Ashley Curry and Joey Robertson, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015. He was born in Madison County on June 19, 2015. Carter was dearly loved by his family and friends and brought great joy to each of their lives.
He is also survived by his sister: Rylee Robertson; maternal grandfather: Chuck Curry; paternal grandparents: Joe and Grace Robertson; maternal great grandmother: Suzanne Hamm, paternal great grandmother: Nancy Robertson Yandell; four aunts: Miranda Curry, Nicole Robertson, Emily Robertson and Jessie James and several other family members.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother: Amy Curry.

Lorene Wilson Vaughn
Lorene Wilson Vaughn, 81, of Richmond, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center. Mrs. Vaughn, the daughter of the late Marshall Wilson and Bessie Maron Wilson, was born in Casey County on April 28, 1934.
She loved people and was instrumental in helping to aid fellow patients at Madison Manor to be involved in activities, attend church services and receive therapy. She was of the Baptist faith.
On January 6, 1949, she united in marriage to Raymond C. Vaughn who preceded her in death on March 4, 2010.
Mrs. Vaughn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Janet & Dan Quigg of Richmond and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Cleo Wilson, Ancil Wilson and J.C. Wilson and her sisters: Exie Combs, Inez Warner and Irene Lawson.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 17, 2015 at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Norma Jane Shivel
Norma Jane Shivel, 68, was promoted into the presence of God, Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the Compassionate Care Center. Jane was born in Jackson County and was raised in Estill County. Her biological parents were the late Leslie Johnson and Dora Hammond Tracey.
She, along with her two sisters, Delores and Judy, were blessed by God to be loved and raised by the late Alvin and Delphia Isaacs Abney. They raised them as if they were their very own children; they called them ‘Mommy and Daddy.’
She had a great love for her family, as well as, camping, fishing, and gardening. She also loved and spoiled her beloved pets: Trixie, Lady and Mik the cat.
She is survived by her husband Larry Shivel, her daughter Jennifer Davidson (Joseph Peter), granddaughters, Kassie Davidson, Chrissy James (David) and her great grandson Andrea (Drea) James, her sisters Delores (Tyrone) Tipton, Kannapolis, NC and Judy (Terry) Baker of Berea. She is also survived by half brothers Larry Johnson, Meadville, PA, Billy Tracy, Spencerville, OH, and half sisters: Claudia Bargiel, Ringgold, GA and Kathy Harter, Spencerville, OH.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter Janie Richardson and a beloved nephew, James Alvin Tipton.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Victory World Outreach Center, 2233 Lexington Road, Richmond, with Pastor Philip Holman officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the church with services following.

Lettie Blanton Stacy
Lettie Blanton Stacy, 87, widow of Carl Stacy, passed away Monday, September 7, 2015. Mrs. Stacy was born on March 21, 1928 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Lewis and Florence Woolery Blanton.
She was a homemaker and loved cooking, gardening and sewing.
She is survived by one daughter: Judy Brock (Lee Roy); five sons: Charles Stacy (Mae), Glenn Stacy, David Stacy (Betty), Doug Stacy (Gina) and Larry Stacy (Angie); a daughter-in-law: Joyce Stacy; one sister: Zora Moore; two brothers: William Blanton (Barbara) and Mac Blanton; fifteen grandchildren: Tonya, Amanda, Stephen, Dale, Lydia, Charlene, Nicki, Aundrea, Matt, Brian, Becky, Tyler, Rachel, Jennifer and Ashley; nineteen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son: Tony Stacy; a sister: Cora Louetta Blanton; and four brothers: Ellis, Nelson, Glyndon and Elbert Blanton.

Mr. Hershel Taylor, age 87, Brodhead, Ky. passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2015 at the home of his son with his family at his side. He was born May 14, 1928 at Bandy, Ky. a son of the late Roy Graden Taylor and Pearlie Mae Reynolds Taylor.
He was a member of Fairview Church of Christ and spent his lifetime farming. Mr. Taylor enjoyed horses, gardening, hunting and sports. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife of 25 years: Ila Wade Frith Taylor; 2 sons: Connie Ray Taylor (Nona) of Brodhead; Coy Dean Taylor (Linda) of Brodhead and one daughter, Myrna Childress also of Brodhead, Ky.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Shannon, Keyvin, Kyle, Shawn, Brandon, Neil, Shea, Devin, Elizabeth, Misty and John; 12 great-grandchildren: Jack, Layla, Grayer, Camden, Bryce, Micaela, Autumn, Landon, Ryan, McKenzie, Kiara and Shawn II.
Mr. Taylor is also survived by one brother: Chester G. Taylor (Ardella) of Eubank, Ky.; 3 sisters Martha Long of Plainfield,Ind., Della Woodson of Berea, Ky. and Irene Taylor of Eubank, Ky.
Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Elizabeth Herrin Taylor whom he married in 1950; 3 brothers: Noel Taylor, June Taylor and infant brother, Harold Taylor. Many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors also survive.

Lillie Gabbard Parsons
Lillie Gabbard Parsons age 82, the wife of Kenneth departed this life Sunday, September 6, 2015 at her residence with her family by her side. Lillie was born on February 9, 1933 in Madison County, a daughter of the late Robert and Laura Gabbard.
She was married 60 years to James Kenneth Parsons and had three children. Lillie was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught for over 30 years. She was a charter member of the Sunrise Baptist Church, the Quail Homemaker’s and the Retired Teachers Association. Lillie loved her family, all children, flowers, cooking, collecting cookbooks, reading and dear friends.
Lillie G. Parsons is survived by: her husband James Kenneth Parsons, her children: James Robert Parsons, Laura Parsons and Lisa Parsons Arnold (O’Neil), three grandchildren: Abigail Wilkins, Christina Burke and Samantha Burke, three great grandchildren: Lilliana, Bishop and Kenneth Wilkins, her four brothers: Bud Gabbard, Glynn (Brenda) Gabbard, Don (Joyce) Gabbard, and Hugh (Marilee) Gabbard, one sister: Frances (Wallace) Baird, and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lillie was preceded in death by two sisters: Minerva Tieche and Marjorie Hylton.

Terry Rawlins, 62, widower of Debbie Roberts, passed away Sept. 9th, 2015, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Mr. Rawlins was a native of Estill County, a son of the late Edgar and Haley Dawes Rawlins.
Mr. Rawlins was a former employee of Carhart, and was a manager for Ryan’s Steak House. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and member of the United States National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his brother Rev. Edgar Rawlins, and his brother-in-law Roger Melby.
Survivors include his sons Steven Terry (and wife Cassie) Roberts, and Brian Roberts; his sisters Virginia Lee Wiseman, Shirley Melby, and Kathy Rawlins; his sister-in-law Phyllis Rawlins; several nephews and a niece.
Services will be held Monday, September 14th, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Lewis Funeral Home, with Allen Rawlins and Stanley Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call after 5:00 pm Sunday.

Opal (Cox) Ross was born April 22, 1930 in Jackson County and departed this life Thursday, September 10, 2015 at her residence, being 85 years of age. She was the daughter of the late John & Carrie (Messer) Cox.
Opal is survived by one daughter, Carrie Lynn Farmer and husband, Ronnie of Beattyville. She was blessed with two grandsons, Matthew Jay Barrett of Beattyville and Christopher S. Barrett and wife Kimberly of Richmond and one great granddaughter, Kinzley Allison Barrett of Richmond.
In addition to her parents, Opal was also preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Ross and by the following siblings, Leonard Cox, Lucian Cox, Isaac Cox, Jack Cox, Jesse Cox, Bolivar Cox, Mayferey Cox, Myrl Arvin and Anna Lee Freeman.
