Fatal Traffic Accident: On 07/20/2015, a traffic accident in the parking lot of a local grocery store took the life of a Richmond resident.

At approximately 1:27 P.M., officers were dispatched to the Kroger Marketplace parking lot in the Richmond Plaza (Eastern Bypass @ Berea Road) in response to a traffic accident involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found Christine Blakeman, age 89, Dennis Street, on the ground with her armed pinned between two vehicles. Blakeman was suffering from an obvious significant head injury and a severe burn to her back. First responders extracted Blakeman and transported her directly to UK Medical Center. It would be learned later in the afternoon that Blakeman had died from her injuries.

The investigation revealed that a vehicle being operated by Mary Hall, 43, Concord Road, was backing from a parking space and continued to back in a semi-circle, striking Blakeman who was on foot returning to her vehicle after disposing of a shopping cart. Hall’s vehicle continued to back until it struck a parked and unattended vehicle, leaving Blakeman on the ground and pinned between the two vehicles. The impact of the collision also caused the vehicle that Hall collided with to move forward and strike another parked vehicle.

Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of accident.
