At this time of year, a lot of people in the Bluegrass are making plans for new beginnings. January 1 is a time to put to rest those versions of ourselves who are microwaving that trans-fats-flavored popcorn, sitting with the remote control in hand, or taking a long winter’s nap. We resolve to put better things into our bodies.
Beginning on January 3, Bluegrass Writers Studio is giving you the opportunity to start off strong keeping those promises. Ten incredible authors are coming to the Lexington Downtown Hilton to read from their work, sign books, and answer any questions you may have about their novels, memoirs, and poems. All you have to do is come listen – there will be no weigh-ins, no calorie counting, and no weight lifting required. And yet you’ll be changed in the end.
Bluegrass Writers Studio is the Low-Residency Creative Writing MFA at Eastern Kentucky University. Each year, we host this reading series to bring great literature to Lexington. This year’s guests are Tom Franklin, Beth Ann Fennelly, Jan Beatty, Rigoberto Gonzalez, Maureen McHugh, Sean Thomas Dougherty, Kelly Braffet, Lauren Grodstein, Sam Lipsyte, and Alissa Nutting. Bluegrass Writers Studio will have each author’s books for sale at their events. Each reading takes place at 5:30 in the Hilton’s Triple Crown Room, nightly from January 3 to 11 (with the exception of Sunday January 5, when we’ll be in the Kincaid room). See the Calendar section for more details, or go to creativewriting.eku.edu and click on Winter Residency.
Join us in celebrating the end of our consciences making us feel small, and the beginning of our consciousness being greater. See you there!
