(Saturday, March 23, 2013 – Lexington, Kentucky) – Winners of today’s State MATHCOUNTS
Competition held at the Clarion Hotel North in Lexington, Kentucky are:

John Wang of Kentucky Country Day coached by Ann Ponniah – 1st place
Emily Liu of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Carol Bridgewater – 2nd place
Cici Mao of Winburn Middle School coached by Paula Cissell – 3rd place
David Ma of Winburn Middle School coached by Paula Cissell – 4th place

The four students competed against 159 other 6th , 7th and 8th grade “mathletes” from 51 schools around the Commonwealth at today’s competition. Each of the four students was awarded a full-tuition, four-year college scholarship to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. They each also won an expense-paid trip to the National MATHCOUNTS competition in Washington D.C. on May 9-12, 2013, where they will represent the Commonwealth of KENTUCKY for the national title. Each individual will also compete for additional scholarships, a trip to US Space Camp, medals, and other awards.

Carol Bridgewater, a teacher at Meyzeek Middle School, will coach the Kentucky team. Her team of four students won the 1st place team position. The remaining top ten students were:

Zach Baugher of Louisville Classical Academy coached by Scott Boyd – 6th place
Tuan Nguyen of Louisville Collegiate School coached by Kathleen Crawford – 7th place
Ben Xie of Winburn Middle School coached by Paula Cissell – 8th place
Ronit Kar of Winburn Middle School coached by Paula Cissell – 9th place
Zachary Althouse of Lone Oak Middle School coached by Lisa Dukes – 10th place

After Meyzeek Middle School’s 1st place finish in the team category, the remaining top ten team winners (out of 28 competing teams) were:

MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program designed to develop and strengthen math, science, leadership and teamwork skills. This is the 30th year for the competition, which was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Insurance Company, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among all middle school students in order to assist in developing a technically literate population essential to U.S. global competitiveness and the quality of life.
