On July 13-15, Berea Country Club hosted their annual Men’s Invitational. This tournament draws players from all over eastern Kentucky and some from Tennessee. We had 85 players this year. In the shootout on Friday night (played before a motorized gallery) Randy Jewell came in First, with Jay Simmons, Second and Greg Prater, Third.
After the two days play, with a couple of rain delays, the Champion was Eric Mason, with Kevin Lawson, Second, Randy Jewell, Third and Colby Brown, Fourth. In the First Flight, the winners were Elmo Greer, First, Ronnie Garland, Second, Michael Christopher, Third, and Brad Mullins, Fourth. Third Flight winners were Kris Mills, First, Bobby Wilson, Second, Sonny Lawson, Third, and Andy Watkins, Fourth. Fourth Flight was won by David Schultz, Second, Matt Vickers, Third, Gary Rose, and Fourth, Eric Adams.
There was a wonderful filet dinner on Saturday night with a dance following. Music was provided by Rock Steady. The course was in great shape even with the rain. There were many volunteers and hole sponsors that made this a successful tournament. Thanks to all of you for your support and help.
ON JULY 28 Berea Country Club hosted a tournament for the girls and boys team at Berea Community High School. The winning team was the Lakes Funeral Home team consisting of Greg Lakes, Bob Adkins, Chuck Morgan and Mike Robinson with a 55. Taking Second honors was the team of Trey Terrill, Steven Gadd, Dennis Hisle and Josh Abner with a 58. In the special events the longest drive was by one of the golf students, Trey Terrill, and Larry Sandefur; the closest-to-the-pin was Mike Robinson.
Domino’s Pizza was served to the hungry golfers after play and Coach Bernie Harris presented the awards. Coach Harris did a great job as Chairman of this event and raised some much needed funds for our student golfers.
ON JULY 31 Steven Thomason finished his summer with a hole-in-one on number 5. He was playing with his father, Mark, and brother, Nick. Steven and Nick left for Cumberland College on August 2 where they will be playing football this fall.
ON AUGUST 2 Charlie Homa had a hole-in-one on number 5 also. He was playing with Don Abney and Jim Bowman. This was Charlie’s third hole-in-one and the second one on this hole. Congratulations, Charlie!
ON AUGUST 4 AND 5 Berea Country Club hosted a Couple’s Tournament. This was a two day tournament which had only one rain delay on Sunday. In the Championship Flight we had two couples tie for first with 135. In this flight all ties must be played off. The two teams were Nikki Layne/Greg Prater and Tara and Matt Brown.
On the second playoff hole, number 5, Nikki hit her tee shot to within a foot of the pin. This gave them a birdie and the win.
Tara and Matt Brown took the Second Place honors. First Flight was won by Kim Gilliam and Whitney Maupin and Second was the team of Barbara Belcher and Kenny Hayes. Second Flight was won by Pat and Dan Crawford beating out Lynn and Bruce Lainhart on a scorecard match.
Saturday night the golfers were treated to a delicious supper with Anthony Hudson providing the tunes. It was also Mary M. Lutes birthday so a good time was had by all!
Boone Tavern is doing a golf promotion this month. Come to Berea Country Club (or other club of your choice), play golf then take your scorecard to Boone Tavern. Give it to your server and they will enter you for a dinner for two! What fun!
