The City of Berea, in cooperation with the Kentucky Environmental Foundation and Sustainable Berea, Inc., has received a grant to develop a comprehensive Berea Energy Cost-Savings Plan (BECS) for the entire city, including households, businesses, and other institutions.
Benefits: There are several benefits in developing a comprehensive energy cost-savings plan for the city:
- The plan program saves energy and thereby saves money
- It improves public heath through decreased air pollution
- Improves the city’s economic attractiveness and creates green jobs
- Improves the city’s fiscal position
- Improves city fuel emergency preparedness
Plan: The plan is a five-step process beginning with an inventory of all community energy usage and all city government energy usage. This is followed by next setting savings targets, writing a plan, an implementation program, and on-going monitoring to measure progress over time.
This is a unique approach to energy conservation. It is both comprehensive and measurable. The energy inventory has compiled all city and city government energy consumption for the year 2010. The idea is to set measurable goals and to subsequently measure plan progress over time. Please click here for to read the data report and which includes an executive summary. Berea Energy Costs Savings Plan You can also watch the City Council, Nov 15, 2011 presentation of the data report; please scroll to marker 16:30. http://vimeo.com/32207321 Although the report is technical in nature, the most important thing is that it creates a baseline to measure future progress.
Committees: There are two committees helping guide the plan development. One is a community wide group comprised of 4 subcommittees: residential, commercial, transportation, and public outreach teams. A fifth team is comprised of city government staff looking to save money there.
Potential consumer energy savings cover a wide range of energy improvements ranging from no-cost, to low-cost, and finally, some cost. And with constantly rising energy costs, it makes good sense to start saving energy as soon a possible because the earlier the cost savings begin, the larger the savings over time and as prices rise. One of the best places to start is at www.energysavers.gov., or for a Kentucky oriented website go to http://energy.ky.gov/efficiency/Pages/default.aspx — but there are literally hundreds of other websites on this topic.
Public Involvement: The BECS process is now in the plan development stage. Public input is welcomed and encouraged. Please contact us if you have any questions, suggestions or want to participate in the process.
