Cyclists That Pedaled Through Your Community to Benefit Affordable Housing Completed their Journey!
Philadelphia, PA – Bike & Build is a nonprofit organization that operates cross-country and regional cycling trips for service-minded young adults to raise money and awareness for affordable housing. This past summer, 132 young adults cycled across the country and regionally to benefit the affordable housing cause. One of Bike & Build’s 5 teams rode through your community this summer. Bike & Build announced that its riders donated nearly $140,000 to affordable housing organizations across the United States in 2018.
Bike & Build’s 132 riders, ages 18-29, also contributed over 9,138 cumulative build hours on construction sites during their trip, building homes for low-income folks. Between the dollars donated and the hours volunteered, Bike & Build estimates that riders helped construct or renovate over 1,300 new homes available for those in need in 2018.
This output is the product of 4 cross-country and 1 regional cycling trips sponsored by Bike & Build each summer. Each cross-country trip engages 30 young adults to pedal their bikes from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific over a ten-week period. Before the trip, each rider fundraises at least $5,000 to participate. While on the road, teams stop every fourth or fifth day to volunteer on a build site with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, and YouthBuild. Riders also learn how to advocate for the need for increased availabity of affordable housing. A Bike & Build trip presents unique challenges to its young adults; riders pedal an average of 70 miles per day, sleeping at night on the floors of churches and community centers, and eating donated meals from generous community hosts.
“We are deeply proud of the work our young adult participants did this summer,” said Lily Goldberg, Bike & Build’s Director of Outreach. “Not only did they contribute their volunteered time and fundraised dollars to help build homes for low-income families, they brought awareness to an issue that impacts millions of Americans. Bike & Build riders are the next generation of leaders in their communities. Their cross-country journey represents the powerful result of mixing compassion with determination.”
