Beloved daughter, sister, friend, Berea College colleague and professor, Dr. Katherine Christensen passed away Aug. 19, 2018, after a long illness. Born May 9, 1956, in Seattle, Wash., she was the eldest daughter of John H. (Jack) and Geraldine Christensen.
Studious and intelligent from a young age, she graduated with a history degree from Seattle University, then earned her master’s degree and doctorate from the University of California Berkeley. She taught at Berea College in the History Department from 1991 to 2017.
A lifelong Catholic, Dr. Christensen was active in St. Clare Catholic Church in Berea and the Newman Club at Berea College, and served as a liturgical master of ceremonies in the Diocese of Lexington.
She is survived by her parents, of Edmonds, Wash.; sisters Jeanne Fischer (Ed), Anne, Melanie, and Mary, and brother Paul; three nephews and two nieces; numerous cousins, and members of her adopted Kentucky family, including the Fitzgeralds / Aulls.
A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at St. Clare, with a reception following in the church hall. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at St. Clare. Committal will be at Berea Cemetery, followed by a gathering at noon at Berea College Hutchins Library. Davis & Powell Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Berea College History Department or to St. Clare’s parish.
