William Edward Lowery
William Edward “Billy” Lowery, 77, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond. Born January 31, 1941, in Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of William H. and Beatrice (Frazier) Lowery, both of whom preceded him in death.
Billy was a former IBM employee and was owner of Lowery’s Lube and Tire, as well as part-owner of the former Lowery’s Texaco. He was a member of Madison Hills Christian Church. Billy was an avid Corvette enthusiast but most of all enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Edester) Lowery; one son, David Lowery (Kimberly); one sister, Jean Howard; five grandchildren, Brian, William David, Sara Beth, Katelyn and Brynna Lowery, all of Richmond; a special niece, Debra Hourigan and three nephews.
Billy was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Lowery.
Funeral service for Billy will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, May 7, 2018 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Marty Frazer officiating. Private burial will follow. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Rick Bogard, Donald Martin, Brian Lowery, Rex Turner, Tim Miller, and Russell Barclay. Honorary bearers will be Jimmy Howard, Bobby Combs, Bobby Coates and Wayne Wells.

Margaret Lucille VanWinkle
Margaret Lucille Durham VanWinkle, age 78, wife of Willie VanWinkle died Friday, May 4th, 2018 at Rockcastle Regional Medical Center. She was born in Rockcastle County on May 20th, 1939 to the late John Henry Durham who died when she was 8 years old, and the late Verna Jeannette Blair Durham Powell and step-dad Amos Powell.
She was a homemaker, poker enthusiast, and loved to play video game. Mrs. VanWinkle was a true humanitarian allowing anyone that knocked at her door to live in her home, she raised many children and loved them as she did her own children. She was of the Holiness faith.
Other than her father, Mother, & Dad. She was preceded in death by one son, William Douglas VanWinkle, one brother, Cecil Powell, two sisters, Norma Elizabeth Durham Damrell, and Martha Lee Durham Damrell.
She is survived by her husband, Willie VanWinkle of Berea KY two daughters, Melissa Ann Clark of Berea, KY and Carla VanWinkle Rowe and her husband Kevin of Mount Vernon, KY three brothers, James Edward Durham, and his wife Opal Damrell Durham, Clyde Mundy Powell and his wife Faye Anglin Powell, Ronald David Powell, and his wife Christina Powell, two sisters, Brenda Geraldine Powell, and Lou Verda Powell Coffey all of Berea, KY. Two grandchildren, Sahara Margaret Gentry, and Tyler Douglas VanWinkle along with a host of other relatives and friends survive.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 9th, 2018 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Vester Alexander officiating, burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 8th, 2018 from 4-9 PM at the funeral home.
Bernard Gary Proctor
Bernard Gary Proctor, age 73, husband of Norma Proctor, died Wednesday May 2nd, 2018 at Baptist Health-Richmond. Mr. Proctor was born June 19th, 1944 in Rockcastle County to the late Bernard Lee and Velva Holcomb Proctor.
He was of the Baptist Faith, loved his grandchildren and his dog Eddie, he also enjoyed fishing and flower gardening. Mr. Proctor was a member of Kingston Masonic Lodge #315 F. & A. M.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by; two brothers, Wayne, and Brad Proctor, and one sister, Rita Lakes.
Mr. Proctor is survived by his wife, Norma Proctor of Berea, his daughter, Sheila and her husband David Jones of Richmond, KY two grandsons, Justin Jones and his wife Sarah and Cody Jones both of Richmond, KY one brother, Neal Proctor and his wife Maisy of McKee, KY two sisters, Gail Livesay and her husband Wayne, and Norma Kennedy and her husband Eddie both of Berea.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, May 5th, 2018 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Cortez officiating. Burial will follow in the Rimell Cemetery in Rockcastle County. Visitation will be 11:00 AM until the service.

Larry Junior Abner
Larry Junior Abner, age 69, husband of Barbara Jean Hensley Abner died Tuesday, May 1st at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Mr. Abner was born August 31st, 1948 in Madison County, KY to the late Emory and Norma Lee Burns Abner.
He was a self-employed builder, a Vietnam Veteran serving with the Maine Corps. An avid outdoors person he enjoyed fishing, hunting and 4 wheeling. Mr. Abner was of the Holiness faith.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by one step-son, Shane Adkins.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Abner, his daughter, Brooklynn Adkins Abner, four step-sons, Terry and Timmy Brockman, Michael & Tony Adkins, three brothers, Leonard Abner, Bob Cates, and Gary Cates all of Berea, KY. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Monday, May 7th, 2018 at Crestview Holy Sanctuary with Rev. Harold Eads, Rev. Virgil Gibson, and Rev. Terry Brockman officiating. Gary Ray Miller, age 57, died Tuesday May 1, 2018 at his residence. Gary was born July 19, 1960 in Rockcastle County to the late Monroe and Viola VanWinkle Miller. Gary was of the Baptist faith.
Gary is survived by one daughter, Mary Leann Miller, one brother, Randy Miller and his wife Alice, two sisters Wilma Jean Rose and her husband Keith, Debbie Long, five grandchildren, Ashley Whittemore, Christopher Whittemore, Sarah Frazer, Michael Frazer, and Charity Strong.
Other than his parents Gary was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Joann Strong.

Mossie Marie Mullins
Mossie Marie Mullins age 98, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 at The Terrace Nursing Home. Mossie was born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky to the late Jimmy and Flerrie Robinson Thomas.
She was the widow of James William “Pete” Mullins, they were married over 61 years and together they raised two sons, Ronnie and Lonnie Thomas. She was a homemaker and excellent cook, who would never let you leave hungry. She loved caring for and being with her family. She was also a member of White Lick Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Thomas and his wife Bernice, one grandson Lonnie Lee Thomas, and five brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her son, Ronnie (Joyce) Thomas; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 pm Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Lakes Funeral Home in Berea with Rev. Wayne Harding officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11am-1pm at the funeral home.

Evelyn Burnell Hamilton age 90, passed away May 4, 2018 at the Terrace Nursing Facility in Berea. Evelyn was born in Madison County to the late Russell and Lucy Cochran Burnell.
She retired from Westinghouse in Richmond KY, and was a member of the White’s Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Daniel Hamilton, and her siblings, William Russell Burnell, Margaret Burnell, and Charles Burnell.
She is survived by her brother William (Barbara) Collins of Berea.
Graveside services will be Monday May 7, 2018 at 2 pm at the Berea Cemetery; Lakes Funeral Home Berea is in charge of arrangements.
Madelyn McClendon, age 98 of Berea, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Hospice Compassionate Care Center. Madelyn was born in Jackson County to the late Neal and Pearlie Harrison Marcum.
She was a beautician and member of Silver Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husbands, Dewey D. Clemons and Hughie “Mac” McClendon; one son, Larry Clemons; two brothers, Clarence Marcum and Ned Marcum; and five sisters, Florence Barnhill, her fraternal twin sister, Faye Adkins, Nancy Norris, Rebecca Cauley, and Helen Fitzgerald.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Clemons and his wife Kathy and Wayne Clemons; many nieces and nephews; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Lakes Funeral Home Berea with Bro. Jeff Reed officiating. Burial will follow at 2pm at the T.M. Lakes Cemetery in Jackson County.
M. Owens Nelson
M. Owens Nelson, M.D., age 71, husband of Diane Martin Nelson, died at his home on Edisto Island, SC surrounded by family on May 2, 2018. Owens was raised by his parents, Elizabeth “Sugie” Nelson and Milton Nelson, Sr. in St. Matthews, SC.
He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1973. He finished his medical training in hematology and oncology at the University of Kentucky, where he worked as an attending physician for several years before going into private practice. Dr. Nelson founded Bluegrass Hematology Oncology in Lexington and practiced until 1998, was a founding member of Hospice of the Bluegrass, and volunteered his time at several charity medical clinics in Lexington. He was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church.
In addition to his loving wife, Owens is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Owens Nelson-Cooke (John Cooke), Heather Anne Proffitt, and Diana Jane Workman. He is also survived by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Cornelia Hane (Shay) along with his niece, nephew, and their families.
Visitation 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 with funeral service to follow at 6 pm. Private entombment the next day. A memorial service in Edisto Island will follow at a later date. Reppert Funeral Home (Berea, KY) entrusted with arrangements.

Margaret Francis Roberts
Margaret Francis Dalton Roberts, 92, of Richmond, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 at Kenwood Nursing Home in Richmond, Kentucky. Born October 11, 1925, in Richmond, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Charlie and Mamie Tussey Dalton, both of whom preceded her in death.
She was a manufacturer with Parker Seal for 30 years and enjoyed quilt making, crocheting and gardening, especially flowers. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Paint Lick Methodist Church and attended First Baptist Church in Richmond.
Survivors include her son, Doug (Lynda Keen) Roberts of Richmond, KY; two sisters, Helen Crockett of Lexington, KY and Opal Webb of Sadieville, KY; two grandchildren Beth (Mike) Rice and Marc (Lynn) Roberts, both of Richmond along with two great-granddaughters; Jadelyn and Tresslyn Rice.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: four brothers, Eddy Dalton, Charles Dalton, Raymond Dalton, and Lois Dalton; and two sisters, Alene Howard and Ora Lee Beasley.

Phyllis Jean Otero
Phyllis Jean Otero, 78, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Brookdale Richmond Place in Lexington, Kentucky. Born January 20, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Helen Louise Cheney and Charles Byrne, both of whom preceded her in death.
She was a Production Planner with EnerSys (Yuasa – Exide Inc.) for over 30 years and retired in July 2011. A parishioner of St. Mark Catholic Church she was a member of the Red Hat Ladies Club and the Richmond Homemakers Club. An avid reader Phyllis also did volunteer work at Hospice. Phyllis loved her puppies Phoebe and Pebbles but most of all she loved her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons, Ray (Kim) Otero of Union, KY and Bryan (Helen) Otero of Versailles, KY; two brothers, Charles Byrne and Dan Byrne along with grandchildren Nathan Robert Otero and Matthew Ryan Otero (fiancé, Julie Beck). In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded on death by her daughter, Anita Otero and brothers, Thomas Byrne, Patrick Byrne and Michael Byrne,

Michael Wayne Mayes
Michael Wayne Mayes, 64, of Dreyfus, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Kenwood Health & Rehabilitation. Mike, the son of Ralph Mayes and Evelyn Kelley Mayes, was born in Madison County on May 2, 1954.
He worked for Peer Oil and most recently, Bluegrass Plating. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing bingo. His favorite pastime was spent with his dog, Jack. He was united in marriage to Susie Darlene Croucher Mayes who preceded him in death.
Survivors include: his sister: Sandra Mayes; five brothers: Harold Raymond Kelley and wife Wilma, Ralph Eugene Mayes, Donald Ray Mayes and wife Donna Sue, Ricky Arvel Mayes and Charles Allen Mayes and wife Marilyn; special friend, Steve Lakes and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded by brothers: Arthur Douglas Mayes and Lonnie Darol Mayes.

Mrs. Sharon Caudill Ponder, 55 of Brodhead, died Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was born in Berea, KY on August 6, 1962 the daughter of Douglas and Shirley Jean Cummins Caudill. S
he was a graduate of Rockcastle County High School and Eastern Kentucky University and retired after 30 years of service as a teacher for the Rockcastle County School System. She was a member of the Rockcastle County Retired Teachers Association as well as a member of Bible Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, riding in her convertible and traveling, and taking care of her family.
She is survived by her son, Douglas Ponder and wife Danielle of Hardyville; her father, Douglas Caudill of Brodhead; her fiancé Buck Vance of Brodhead; three brothers, Douglas Myron Caudill of St. Petersburg, FL, Steven Duane Caudill and wife Marsha of Brodhead, and Gary Shawn Caudill of Berea; three nieces, Kaitlin Thacker of Berea, Olivia C. French of Livingston, and Taylor Sloat of Brodhead; a nephew, Jeremiah T. Caudill of Brodhead; and a sister-in-law, Karen Sloat of Brodhead. A host of other family and friends also survives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric Ponder; her mother, Shirley Caudill; and a brother, Randall Allan Caudill.
Visitation will be May 2, 2018 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Bible Baptist Church. Funeral service will be May 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Church.

Richard Lee Pendery, age 32, husband of Lindsey Danielle Thomas Pendery of Mt. Vernon, departed this life on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018. He was born on January 8th, 1986 to Richard Lee Pendery and Brenda Lee Howard.
He was of the Baptist Faith. He was employed at Hitachi Company in Berea, KY. Richard enjoyed fishing, playing with his kids and basketball.

Raymond Paul Burdette, age 59, passed away Saturday, April 28th, 2018. He was born on January 3rd, 1959 in Berea, KY to Elmer and the late Edith Burdette.
He was an employee of Okonite Cable Co. having been employed there for 40 years. He was past president of the Union at Okonite Cable Co. and member of Brodhead Lions Club. Raymond found great joy in Nascar, camping, drag strip racing and puzzles.

Mrs. Christine McFerron age 82, of Mt.Vernon, passed away Tuesday May 1, 2018 after a long illness. She entered this life on May 4, 1935 in Rockcastle County the daughter of the late William D. and Ollie Peters Sowder.
She was a homemaker, enjoyed her dogs, yard work, flowers, and the U.K. Wildcats, but most of all she loved spending time with her children & grandchildren, she was also a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.
Those left to celebrate her life are: her daughter; Deborah and (Alex) Prewitt of Louisville, Ky. Two sons; Gary and (Freda) Hayes, and Billy and (Rhonda) Hayes all of Mt.Vernon. Two sisters; Linda Hayes of Mt.Vernon, and Lucille Underwood of Louisville. One brother; Ed and (Joann) Sowder of Richmond. Four grandchildren; Christie Thompson of Louisville, Josh Hayes, Deana Newcomb, and Ryan Bradley all of Mt.Vernon, and four great grandchildren; Morgan Mullins, Lindsey Newcomb, Madison & Jaeleigh Hayes all of Mt.Vernon. Elvis Simp Young, age 59, of Winchester Road in Irvine passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was born February 8, 1959 in Lee County and was the son of the late Joe Young, Jr. and Juanita Newton Young.
He was a salesman with Bunt Gross Auto Sales and a United States Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and had lived in Estill County most of his life.

Janet Woosley, age 64, of Laurel Street in Irvine passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at her home following a long illness. She was born September 9, 1953 in Jackson County and was the daughter of the late Floyd and Maggie Marcum Isaacs.

Lohris Wayne Johnson, age 78, of Wimauma, Florida, passed away Saturday, April 28th, at his home following a short illness. He was born January 23, 1940, in Estill County, a son of the late Rev. Roy C. and Hazel Dee Hall Johnson.
He was a self employed construction worker and had lived in Estill County most of his life. He attended the Friendship Baptist Church in Wimauma. He was preceded in death by his Wife, Yvonne Morefield Johnson.
He is survived by:

In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by 3 Siblings: Kathy Johnson, Orval Johnson, and Lenville Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday 1 PM at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Kenny Wasson with burial to follow in the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 AM Friday until service time.
Floyd Clemmons was born February 17, 1953 in Jackson County and departed this life Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 65 years of age. He was the son of the late James F. & Flossie Isaacs Clemmons.
Floyd is survived by three children, David (Maggie) Clemmons of McKee, Laurall (Mickey Ward) Clemmons of Annville and Amy Lakes of McKee. He is also survived by a brother, Leslie Clemmons of Louisville and by two sisters, Faye King of Sand Gap and Marge Alexander of Irvine. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren, Kayla Hoblit, David Clemmons, Dakota Noble, Douglas Clemmons, Jonathan Lakes, Jayden Noble, Destiny Lakes, James Lakes, T.J. Moore III, Tommy Lakes and Derek Clemmons.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was also preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Kay Clemmons; by granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Lakes; by a sister, Dora Clemmons and by three brothers, Paul, Guy & John Clemmons.
Funeral service 1:00 PM Monday, May 7, 2018 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Jimmy Ward officiating. Burial to follow in the Clemmons Family Cemetery.
