Helen McQueen Carnes, age 96, widow of Arthur S. Carnes died Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Berea Health & Rehab. She was born September 10, 1921 in Madison County, KY, to the late Leslie James and Gertrude Bratcher McQueen.
Mrs. Carnes was a retired beautician and had worked for the Heck’s Dept. Store. She also worked for the U.S. Forest Service Research Department. Mrs. Carnes was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel and a charter member of the Liberty Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs. Carnes was passionate in her abilities to crochet, quilt, garden and to care for her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was blessed with a long life due to her strong will and determination, “Don’t say no I can’t until you try to do it” was the motto she instilled in her children.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Alan Frith, five brothers, Ray, Roy, Junior, Bert, and Edward McQueen and two sisters, Dorothy Gadd and Lucille Coy.
Mrs. Carnes is survived by her children, Mac Arthur Carnes of Beaver, WV, Alma Ballinger of Richmond, KY, and Rowena (Larry) Frith of Paris, KY, five grandchildren, Cara Carnes (Steve) Walker, Kristin Adina Carnes, Timothy Ballinger, and Regina (Jason) Leach, Cheryl (Nathan) Vanderford. Two great grandchildren, Grace and Brayden Vanderford, two sisters-in-law, Mary Ida Hinkle Carnes of Bimble, KY, and Betty Gadd McQueen of New Castle, IN. A host of nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be, Robert “Bobby” Gadd, Jason Leach, Nathan Vanderford, Steve Walker, Timothy Ballinger, and Harold Rowlette. Honorary pallbearers will be the nurse’s aides at Berea Health Care and Meals on Wheels delivery drivers.
