Richard Nearn Barnes
Richard Nearn Barnes, 88, loving husband for 60 years of Mary Elizabeth Barnes, went home to be with the Lord on December 4, 2017. He was the fourth son of Wilbur and Helen Barnes. He was born on December 10, 1928 in Washington, DC.
His family moved to San Bernardino, CA when he was two years old and he went on to receive the A.B. degree in Zoology from U.C. Berkeley, the M.A. and P.H.D. degrees at U.C. Davis. While attending schools in California, he was employed for four summers by the U.S. Forest Service as part of a fire suppression team. After attending Berkeley, he served for two years in the U.S. Army. One of those years was spent in Korea. After military service, he was involved as a research assistant at U.C. Davis. Aquatic ecology (limnology) was of particular academic interest, including both freshwater and marine algae and freshwater fish.
Prior to moving to Berea in 1962, he taught at California State at Sacramento. He also taught summer courses at U.C. Davis and Donner Summit for the National Audubon Society. He served Berea College as a Biology Professor for thirty two years from 1962 to 1994 and as Department Chairman from 1986 to 1992. He was the recipient of the Seabury Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Phi Kappa Phi Teacher of the Year Award and the Kentucky Outstanding Teacher Award.
Richard’s hobbies included: Hiking and nature field trips, performing amateur magic shows and he loved sharing jokes. In addition, he also learned 17 foreign languages.
Richard is survived by his wife and two daughters, Kathryn Turnbull of Berea and Marcia (Michael) McWilliams of Salvisa, KY and two grandchildren, Ariel (Tim) Miller of Frankfort, KY and Richard (Tamra Lutes) Turnbull of Covington, KY. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Brents, Bill and Bruce Barnes.
A Celebration of Life will be held December 9 at 2:00 pm at First Christian Church in Berea. With visitation and reception to follow in fellowship hall.

William Ray Mills Sr.
William Ray Mills Sr., age 76, widow of Geraldine Powell Mills died Monday, December 4, 2017 at his home in Melvindale, Michigan. A native of Flat Lick, KY., in Knox County, he was born to the late Willie and Troy Gray Mills on November 16, 1941.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a self-employed truck driver. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren telling stories about his truck driving days, he also loved to restore old cars.
Other than his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son, William Ray Mills, Jr.
Mr. Mills is survived by his daughters, Ida (Christopher) Leavy of Northville, MI., and Kimberly Mills of Melvindale, MI., two brothers, Bobby Eugene Mills of Richmond, KY., and Harry Mills of Berea, KY., his sister, Sue Grimes of Sand Gap, KY., four grandchildren, Stephan A. Geller, Sr., William D. Geller, Whitney Marie Mills, and Lorien Geller. Seven great grandchildren also survive, Chloe, Aiden, Alessa, Stephen, Jr., Sam, Casey, and Wyatt.
Military graveside services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 9th at Silver Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-9 PM at Davis & Powell Funeral Home.
Mary Edna Williams
Mary Edna Williams, age 90 years, 10 months, died Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Terrace Nursing and Rehab Center following an illness. She was a life-long resident of Berea, born February 10, 1927, daughter of the late Thomas and Kizzie Jackson Williams.
Mary was a homemaker, loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She was a property owner and member of Middletown Baptist Church.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Joyce Hendricks; 1 son, Stewart Williams, Sr.; 4 grandchildren, Michael Napier (Melonie), Travis Smith, Tara Thomas, Stewart Williams, Jr.; 6 great grandchildren including Clayton, Jason Brody, and Kash; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Williams and 7 siblings.

Bert Ingram, 78, of Berea died at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 following a short illness. He was a life-long resident of Berea, born August 28, 1939, son of the late Green and Susie Gabbard Ingram.
A dedicated 40+ year employee of Berea College who loved vegetable gardening , pitching horseshoes, Dodge Trucks, Cincinnati Reds baseball, UK basketball, yard sales and playing softball with his friends in Gabbardtown.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years Wanda Powell Ingram; son Mitchell Ingram (Mary), daughters Penny Ingram and Shana Barnett (Bobby); grandchildren Heather, Jacob and Cheyenne, as well as numerous relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Anna Lee Grant.

Ernestine “Tina” Fisher Ponder Wolfe, 89, of Berea, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Berea Health & Rehab Center following an illness. She was a Haldeman, Kentucky native (Rowan County) born May 29, 1928, daughter of the late Ernest and Myrtle Hamm Fisher.
She was a homemaker, former secretary, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and attended the Church of God. She was a resident of Dayton, Ohio until 1969, and a resident of Livingston, Kentucky until 1992 when she moved to Berea.
Survivors include her daughter, Marsha Jones (Jim); son, Larry Ponder (Rebecca); granddaughters, Jamie Kiefer (Jim), Nichole Lashmett (Chad), Amy Crutcher, Kari Adams; great-grandchildren, Riley, A.J., Ben, Jacob; and step-daughter, Gail Cope (James).
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Ponder, Jr.; her 2nd husband, Burl Wolfe; son, Terry Ponder; brother and sister in law, Murvel and Mary Fisher.

Beulah Allene Neeley Pennington, 95, of Somerset, formerly of Madison County, died Thursday, December 7, 2017, at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. Born August 17, 1922 in Madison County, she was the daughter of Charlie Benjamin and Bessie Frances Peters Neeley, both of whom preceded her in death.
Beulah was the widow of Harry E. Pennington. She was a homemaker and enjoyed painting, embroidering, and quilting. Beulah was of the Baptist faith. When in good health, she was an avid bowler.
Survivors include one son, Harry A. Pennington of Somerset; one daughter, Judy Gail Grubbs, and husband, Jack, of John Day, Oregon; one brother, Bill Neeley, and wife Faye, of Hamilton Ohio; and several grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Lina Carol O’Connor and two sisters, Georgia Lee Hunter and Thelma Sandlin.

John David Lunsford
John David Lunsford, 56, of Irvine, passed away Tuesday morning, December 5, 2017 t the UK Medical Center, Lexington. Born February 15, 1961, in Houston, Texas, he was the son of John Gilbert and Opal Mae Sawyer Lunsford, both of whom preceded him in death.
John was self-employed before becoming disabled and was a U S Army veteran who served during the Grenada era. He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and was the newly elected President of the Free Riders Motorcycle Club of Irvine.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Linton Lunsford of Irvine; three sons, Michael Andreas Lunsford of Germany, John Thomas Lunsford of Irvine, and Harley Gilbert Lunsford (Peggy) of Berea; one sister, Cari L. Duff of Richmond; five grandchildren and a special friend, Bubba.
Memorial service for John will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, December 8, 2017 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.
Sidney Gene Emmitt
Mr. Sidney Gene Emmitt, 87, of Richmond, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at St. Joseph Hospital – East. Mr. Emmitt, the son of the late Henry Emmitt and Amanda Atkerson Emmitt, was born in Madison County on June 19, 1930.
He was an equipment operator for Union Local 181. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchild. Early in life, he enjoyed hunting and was an avid baseball fan. He was always up for a good meal. For many years he was a member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge #1 F. & A.M. and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons: Billy Emmitt and wife Kay and Bruce Emmitt, all of Richmond; Jerry Emmitt of Tulsa, OK; Lee Emmitt and wife Lisa also of Richmond and David Emmitt of Lexington; two daughters: Jo Emmitt and Julie Emmitt both of Lexington; his sister: Betsey Morgan and husband Millard; three grandchildren: Jessica Terry and husband Adam, Savannah Emmitt and Silas Gene Emmitt; a great granddaughter: Mila Terry and the mother of their children: Kitty Emmitt.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Monday, December 11, 2017 at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home beginning with Masonic Funeral Rites. Burial will follow in the Hall Cemetery. Visitation will be after 12:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Earl Estes, 95, of Waco, passed away Thursday morning, December 7, 2017 at his home. Mr. Estes was born in Madison County on September 21, 1922, the son of the late Elisha and Bessie Price Estes.
He was the retired owner and operator of Robinson Produce, a company which he had been a part of, for over 45 years, as an employee and owner. He was a former volunteer fireman, a member of the former Madison Lodge I.O.O.F. and was a member of The Lancaster Road Church of God.
Survivors include five grandchildren: Donna Proctor (Jimmy), Stephanie Repasky (Jim), Michelle Hartz (Jack), Eddie Robinson (Angela) and Michelle Burnett (Josh); his daughter-in-law: Thelma “T.J.” Estes; his dear friend and companion for 37 years: Christine Anderson; fourteen great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son: Earl Grant Estes; three grandchildren: Ashley, Crystal and Dawn Estes; one great-grandchild: Jason Robinson; three brothers: Clarence, Edgar and Russell Estes and three sisters: Edna Hunter, Louise Rupard and Dorothy Johns.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Payne officiating. The burial will be private on Monday in the Richmond Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Muriel Clayton Short
Muriel Clayton Short, 76, of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 in Lexington. He was born in Richmond, Ky., on August 18, 1941, the son of the late Felix and Dovie Hurt Short.
He was a graduate of Madison High School and a member of the Victory Tabernacle Church of God. Muriel was a retired employee of the City of Richmond.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela Holland Short; one son, Patrick Short; a daughter, Claudia Blackburn (William); one brother, Carl Short (Mary); his mother-in-law, Jeanette Burns Holland; two grandchildren, Pamela Rose Blackburn and Magnolia Raegan Blackburn.
He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Mrs. Henrietta Hardy Neal, 76, of Richmond, passed away Monday, December 4, 2017 at Baptist Health – Richmond. Mrs. Neal, the daughter of Willie Hardy and Eudell Howard Hardy, was born in Madison County on June 21, 1941.
Early in life, she worked for Grant’s Department Store and then later for IGA and K-Mart. She loved to read and tend her flowers. In June 1960, Mrs. Neal united in marriage to Ronald Neal who survives.
She is also survived by her daughter: Lynn Moberly and husband Calvin of Richmond; three grandchildren: Kim Penix (& Craig Cornette), Edward D. Crowe and Melissa Moberly and six great grandchildren.
Mrs. Neal was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lydia Carol Crowe.

Melva Jo Kirby
Ms. Melva Jo Kirby, 74, of Richmond, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at the UK Hospital in Lexington. She was born in Madison County on February 15, 1943, to the late Sam Kirby and Josephine Engle Kirby Cotton.
She earned her Masters Degree in Education Counseling from Eastern Kentucky University. Ms. Kirby was a very caring and giving person – she was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling, especially going to the ocean.
Survivors include: her four sons, Samuel “Sam” Armstrong (Laura), Bradley Armstrong (Debbie), Kirby Armstrong, and Joseph Armstrong (Courtney); four sisters, Tamara Cotton (Bill Craft), Carol Cotton, Janie Cotton, and Peggy Mann (Joe); 10 grandchildren, Samuel, Luke, Kaela, Corwin, Matthew, Allie, Melissa, Jeremy, Thomas, and Rabih; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Mrs. Lillian Jolene Cope Bullen, age 89 of Waco, KY and formerly of Rockcastle Co., died Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY. She was born in Wabd, Rockcastle County, KY on April 6, 1928 the daughter of Roy Lee and Nellie Norton Cope.
She was a retired nurse having worked for Rockcastle Hospital in Mt. Vernon, KY, University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY and Bossier Medical Center in Bossier, LA and was a member of Maretburg Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son: Thomas Lee Bullen of Waco, KY and one brother: Roy Burnerd Cope. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bullen was preceded in death by her husband: James Willie Cope; two daughters: Donna Kay Eaton and Jimmie Yvonne Reed; one great grandson: James Thomas Bullen; one brother: Burnis Cope; one sister: Joy Saylor and one granddaughter: Tamera Munsey.
Visitation will be December 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Maretburg Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until time of service. Dowell and Martin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Jackie Stephen Plowman, age 61, of Summit Drive in Irvine, passed away Monday, December 4th, at his home, following a long illness. He was born December 7, 1955, in Middletown, OH, a son of the late Boyd Plowman and Edith Young Plowman Martin.
He was a construction worker and had lived in Estill County for the past 20 years. He attended the Irvine First Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by His Wife Betty F. Bowles Plowman, 2 Sons Steven Jack Plowman (Christy), Bryan Allen Plowman both of Florida, 2 Sisters Sandy Snowden McIntosh of Richmond, Lisa Plowman of Irvine, 3 Brothers Leonard Snowden of Ohio, Ray Snowden and Tracy Snowden both of Irvine, he is also survived by 3 Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 Siblings: Mary Jo Plowman Combs and Jerry Snowden.

Ronald Fields was born April 21, 1940 in Perry County and departed this life Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Berea, being 77 years of age. He was the son of the late R.C. & Claudia (Collins) Fields.
Ronald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Crystal (Collier) Fields of McKee and by two daughters, Angie (Steve) Carroll of Tyner and Veronica (Billy Hall) Johnson of Richmond. He is also survived by a brother, Enos Fields of Hazard. He was blessed with three grandsons, David Johnson Jr., Hunter & Chase Carroll and a step granddaughter, Danielle Brockman. Ronald was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed.
Ronald was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Ruby Abrams was born November 22, 1927 in Moraine, OH and departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2017 in Richmond, KY, being 90 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Oscar & Mildred (Rogers) Wilson.
Ruby is survived by two sons, Dallas Abrams and his wife Jean of Sand Gap and Marshall Abrams and his wife Gail Hope of Richmond. She is also survived by two brothers, Charlie Wilson and Harlen Wilson and by three sisters, Betty York, Frances Reynolds and Margaret Jones all of Richmond. Ruby was blessed with three grandsons, Rocky Wayne Abrams, Derrick Abrams and Timmy Abrams, three great grandsons, Andrew, Luke and Daniel Lane Abrams and by one great great grandson, Emmanuel Abrams.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was also preceded in death by her husband, Everett Abrams Jr.

Bill Dunn was born March 23, 1963 in Richmond, KY and departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, being 54 years of age. He was the son of the late George & Laura (Campbell) Dunn.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jean (Conrad) Dunn of Tyner and by three daughters, Christy Hubbard and her husband Johnny, Madison Marks and Jamie Gray all of Tyner. He is also survived by two sisters, Pat Hays of Manchester and Carolyn Wilder of McKee. Bill was blessed with five grandchildren, Kolton, Kainan, Dakota, Jacob & Bradleigh.
Bill was a member of the Tyner Community Church.
He was the Jackson County Jailer and was a member of the Fire Department Board. He will be missed by family and friends alike.

Douglas Eugene Hurst
Douglas Eugene Hurst was born July 10, 1956 in Hamilton, OH and departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, being 61 years of age. He was the son of the late Riley & Pauline (Lainhart) Hurst.
Doug is survived by his wife, Jackie (Dunn) Hurst of Tyner and by two children, Ashley Hurst of McKee and Brandon Young of Annville and by two step children, Devona (Dave House) Dunn of London and Derek Dunn of Gray Hawk. He is also survived by a brother, Earl J. Hurst and his wife Linda of Tyner and by three sisters, Myrtle York and her husband John, Mary L. Parker and her husband Ken and Michelle Parrett and her husband Keith all of Annville. Doug was blessed with two grandchildren, Caleb Lakes and Aaron Gabbard, two step grandchildren, Daelyn Dunn and Jayden Ward and by a special nephew, Austin Reed.
In addition to his parents, Doug was also preceded in death by his wife, Lisa Hurst and by a sister, Brenda K. Hurst.

Phyllis Ann Oliver
Phyllis Ann Oliver was born May 8, 1948 in Owsley County and departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, being 69 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Elmo Smith and Martha Stepp Creech.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Coy Oliver Sr. of Booneville; two children, Betty Jo Thomas of Alexandria and Billy Paul Oliver of Florence and by three step children, Denzil Lee Oliver of Tyner, Carolyn Spurlock of Richmond and Norma J. Oliver of Sand Gap. She is also survived by seven siblings, Ronnie Smith, Gary Smith, Michael Smith, Ruby Smith Dooley, Bonnie Smith Dooley, Sue Smith Baker and Teresa Smith Creech. She was blessed with a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was also preceded in death by three children, Coy Oliver Jr., Irvine Anthony Smith and Bonnie Lou Lynch; by a brother, Billy Smith and by two sisters, Brenda Smith Seale and Phyllis’s twin, Janet Carol Smith Roberts.

Hazel Frances Ooten
Hazel Frances (Fran) Truett Ooten was born June 30, 1944 at Gray Hawk, KY and passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in London, KY on December 4, 2017, being 73 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Billy and Eva (Moore) Truett.
She and her husband, Truman Brack Ooten had been married for 54 years. They had a son, David Ooten of Tyner, KY; one grandson, Joseph Vincent of Abline, Texas; one great granddaughter, Madison and one great grandson, William.
Fran was a member of the Gloryland Baptist Church and attended faithfully when she was able. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother, Carlos Truett.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, son, by 4 brothers, Eugene Truett of McKee, Vinson Truett of Richmond, William (Brenda) Truett of Tyner and Kenneth Truett of McKee; 5 sisters, Alice (Horace) Sexton of Annville, Maxie (Larry) Stivers of McKee, Loretta (Wendell) Maupin of Livingston, Kathy (Dolphus) Young of McKee, Donna (Roger) Parrett of McKee and many nieces, nephews, cousins and by 2 very special friends, Gracie Renner Vance & Vernie Fields.
Funeral service 2:00 PM Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Cecil Burns and Bro. Shane Gabbard officiating. Burial to follow in the Truett Cemetery. Visitation 11:00 AM until time of service.
