Robbery Arrest: On 07/29/2017 just after 11:00 am, officers were called to the Cash Express on Mini Mall Drive in reference to an armed robbery. The suspect entered the business wearing a black mask and brandished a firearm. He ordered the employee to the back of the building where he used black tape to secure her to a chair. He then removed cash from the registers and safe before leaving through the back door.
On 08/07/2017 officers received information from the Kentucky State Police about a suspect vehicle in an armed robbery they were working, that had just occurred. The vehicle was located on Paint Lick Road, and a traffic stop was eventually conducted on Interstate 75. Evidence was located that connected the driver to the Cash Express robbery.
Detectives charged 46 year old Donald VanWinkle of Berea KY with Robbery 1st Degree and Kidnapping.
On 08/09/2017 VanWinkle was also charged with Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Methamphetamine) and Drug Paraphernalia Possession after a search warrant was executed at his residence.
