The Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society and the Fayette County Extension Service are sponsoring a Quilt Registry on August 11 & 12, 2017. Local quilts made during the period from 1800 to 1960 will be registered from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on both days at the Extension Office, 1140 Harry Sykes Way, Lexington, KY 40504.
If you have quilts made within this time frame we encourage you to bring them to this event. The quilts registered will be documented as Fayette County quilts. However, residents of neighboring counties may also bring quilts made during this time period to be registered in Fayette County.
The quilts will be photographed and a physical analysis made to establish the year they were made, how they were made, the pattern used, and any other information the reviewers might be able to ascertain. Biographical data about the quilt maker will be documented. The quilt owner is encouraged to have the following information: The quilt maker’s name, date and place of birth, husband’s name, date and place of marriage, if applicable, date of death and burial site, where and when the quilt was made.
Appointments for up to two (2) quilts will be available for those wanting to bring their favorite quilts to be registered. Quilts will also be accepted on a walk-in basis and registered as time permits, but appointments are strongly recommended.
Data will be compiled and forwarded to the Folk Life Archives at the Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In scholarly research, this information is invaluable to quilt historians, folklorist, genealogists and those interested in social history, especially women’s studies.
There is no charge for the registration of the quilts. A muslin label which may be sewn to the quilt back will be given to the owner of each registered quilt, and includes the registration number and other pertinent information. This information will aid scholars and future generations of your family in locating information about registered quilts online and at the Western Kentucky Folk Life Archives.
