Berea College’s Accounting Program is the second highest ranked for affordability in the top 100 small colleges in the nation. Not only did Berea College make the list, but it is the top-rated Kentucky school; no others were in the top ten.
The distinction was made in a recently published article by Laura Kilmartin, Editor of OAD, which tracks college-level accounting programs to help students with a passion for numbers and strong analytical skills successfully enter the accounting field. Kilmartin said Berea offers the most affordable degree in this ranking.
“We have worked very hard for many years to serve our Accounting, and all our Economics and Business Administration students well at Berea College,” says Ed McCormack, Professor & Program Chair, Economics & Business Program. “It is truly an honor to be included in this ranking.”
Two types of Accounting programs are available at Berea College. The Concentration in Accounting option allows students to take business core and collateral courses with a concentration in accounting. Income Tax, Intermediate Accounting Level I and II, and Managerial Accounting are required for this degree pathway. Accounting students who wish obtain the 150 hours required for CPA certification may pursue the Public Accounting option. In addition to business core and collateral classes, students take courses such as Auditing, Accounting for Governmental and Non-Profit Organizations, Business Law, and other Finance, Economics, or Computer Science courses.
Berea, the South’s first interracial and coeducational college, focuses on learning, labor, and service. Berea admits academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. No student is charged tuition. All students must work at least 10 hours weekly, earning money for books, room and board. Graduates from Berea go on to distinguish themselves and the College in many fields, living out the College’s scriptural motto “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.”
