Martha Bender Reid

Martha Bender Reid, 96, of Berea, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She had resided at Morning Pointe in Richmond since 2012. She was born March 3, 1917, in Berea to the late Ernest A. Bender and Grace Wagers Bender.

She served the Berea Independent School District for nearly 50 years, first as a grade-school teacher and then as a librarian. When Berea Community Schools opened, she remained as the high school librarian until 1987, retiring after 30 years. She returned in the fall of 1987 as the librarian assistant, serving in that position until 2006.

She liked to travel, loved meeting people and adored children. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Berea and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.

In 1943, she married Harold Shrout, who passed away in 1953. She married Edwin P. Reid in 1965. He passed away in 1990.

She also was preceded in death by: brothers Paul Bender, Beverly Bender, Joe Bender; and a sister, Ohna Bender Terrell.

She is survived by: a son, Larry Shrout and daughter-in-law MaryBeth Shrout of Middlesex, N.C.; a niece, Linda Bender Sturm; step-niece Melinda Pickard Whitehead; niece Stephanie Terrell Pulliam; nephews, Ronnie Terrell, Glenn Terrell; niece Betty Barnett Morgan.

The funeral service will be conducted 5 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013, at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home in Berea with Dr. Ed McCurley officiating. Visitation will be from 2 until 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial will be in the Carlisle Cemetery on Monday, December 23, 2013.

Brenda Sue Tipton Dean

Brenda Sue Tipton Dean, passed away peacefully with her beloved family by her side on December 14th, 2013. She was born in Richmond Kentucky on July 2nd, 1951 and graduated Madison High School in 1969.

She married the love of her life, Joseph Dean on June 28th, 1969. She was a baptized believer and a charter member of Madison Hills Christian Church in Richmond, Ky.

She worked at the Richmond Blue Grass Army Depot Credit Union, in patient accounts at Community Hospital, and as a teaching assistant at Southwest Elementary School in Greenwood, Indiana.

Brenda loved most spending time with her grandchildren; going to the movies, bowling, the park, pet stores, playing games, drawing, and shopping. She loved spending time with and entertaining her family at her home, working with children, antiquing, gardening, and cooking. She lived her life thinking only of others through her constant selfless acts of kindness and love.

She is survived by her husband Joe; children David (Alisa) Dean & Lisa (John) Hoskinson; grandchildren: Katelyn & Ashley Hoskinson, Ella & Eva Dean; parents: Irene & David Mitchell; sister Gail (Dean) Goins; sister in law Phyllis (Kenneth) Turner; nieces: Michele Turner & Angela Tyler, Deana Goins & April Wilson; four great nephews Clay Hicks, Nathan, Devin and Justin Tyler; great niece Amber Nichole Hicks and many close and special friends.

Funeral services will be 11am Friday December 20, 2013 at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Marty Frazer officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-9 pm at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Chadwell, Joe Chadwell, Shane Chadwell, Dean Goins, Jason Frazer and Lee Saylor.

Wilma Jean Buckley, 83, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013, at The Terrace Nursing Home in Berea. She was the widow of William Coby Buckley. Mrs. Buckley was born on October 8, 1929, in Estill County, and was the daughter of James and Sallie Betty Smithers Fielder, both of whom preceded her in death.

Survivors include: one son, William Coby Young Buckley of Richmond; two daughters, Jacqueline Sue Davis of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Vickie Fawn Sandlin of Berea; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dortha Mae Newton of Estill County.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: one son, Gary Milton Lindsay Buckley; two brothers, James Fielder Jr. and David Farrell Fielder; and four sisters, Roberta Fielder, Cleata Fielder, Freda Fielder and Anna Witt.

Funeral services for Wilma Jean Buckley will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Sarver officiating. Burial will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery of Estill County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tom Davis II, Tom Davis III, Marc Davis, Steve Davis, Phillip Newton and Michael David Fielder. Ken Sandlin and Earl Sandlin will serve as an honorary pallbearers.

Wayne Lee Whittaker

Wayne Lee Whittaker, 72, of Lexington, formerly of Richmond, passed away early Saturday morning, December 21, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Whittaker was born in Madison County on November 29, 1941, to Clyde and Dollie Neikirk Whittaker.

He retired from S&S Tire after 30 years of employment. Early in life, he enjoyed coaching ladies’ softball and later found great delight in fishing and hunting. His greatest treasures were his family and his church. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Lexington where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon.

On July 2, 1960, he united in marriage with Jo Anne Rhodus Whittaker who survives.

He is also survived by: his son, Brett Scott Whittaker and wife Sandie of Augusta, Georgia; two daughters, Peggy Ingram Browning of Lexington, and Kathy Crank and husband James of Nicholasville; his sister, Carol Rhodus and husband Roy; seven grandchildren, Jason Ingram, Ashley Ingram, Joshua Whittaker and wife Martha, Casey Atkinson, Sara Atkinson, Rachel Shreve and husband Brandon, and Nolan Cole Whittaker; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Shreve, Alyssa May Jones, Laci Atkinson, Patrick Owen Whittaker, Landon Bugg and Mason Crank; his sister-in-law, Ailene Whittaker; as well as, many nephews, nieces and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Whittaker was preceded in death by his brother. Arnold Clay “Buddy” Whittaker.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at the Hillcrest Baptist Church, 1409 Versailles Road, Lexington, with Pastor Tony Hancock and Bro. Gary Ballinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.

Thomas Wayne Plummer

Thomas “Tom” Wayne Plummer, 67, Richmond, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Baptist Health Richmond. Tom was born February 14, 1946, to the late James H. and Edna Sanders Plummer of Richmond, Ky.

Tom had lived most of his life in Richmond where he was active in the American Legion, V.F.W., and was a member of the Kingston Masonic Lodge No. 315. He was a proud Vietnam veteran of the United States Army and received several honors and medals for his service to his country.

After his military duty, he worked at the Bluegrass Army Depot from which he retired. Tom was known as an avid golfer and quite the fisherman. Mr. Plummer was a member of the Peytontown Baptist Church.

He is survived by: one brother, Harry Douglas Plummer of California; two sisters, Helen Plummer Hagewood of Hazel Park, Michigan; and Paula Giles of Madison, Indiana. Also surviving Mr. Plummer are his sister-in-law, Wanda Plummer; and niece, Regina Seyfrit with whom he made his home with for the past several years.

Tom was preceded in death by a brother, James D. Plummer, and two sisters, Ruth Grimes and Wanda Mardis.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013, at the Combs, Parsons and Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Jonathan Tussey officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, December 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Richmond Cemetery.

Debra Jean Putman, 54, Richmond, daughter of John H. and Harriet Tracy Putman, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013, at her home. She was born November 30, 1959, in Frankfort, Germany. For many years Debra worked in Lexington, Ky., as an employee of Amazon.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by: her sister, Julie L. Putman of Alexandria, Virginia; three aunts, Ethelyn Hall, Anna Tracy and Marjore (Jack) Lanthier; and several cousins.

Debra was preceded in death by her brother, John H. Putman Jr.

Kevin Gerald Timm

Kevin Gerald Timm, 50, of Richmond, was the son of Eldon and Nancy (Apsey) Timm. He was born February 16, 1963 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was promoted to Glory on Thursday, December 19, 2013.

Kevin graduated from Swartz Creek Michigan High School in 1981 and from the School of Applied Studies at Bob Jones University in 1985. He had a master electrician license in South Carolina and worked for the Greenville Memorial Hospital there from 1986 to 1989, as a sterilizer mechanic. He worked as an appliance repairman for Duke Energy in South Carolina from 1989 to 1993. In 1993 he began working at the answer center for Duke Energy until 1996.

It was in November, 1996, that Kevin became disabled as the result of an automobile accident, and shortly afterward lost his vision. He loved to listen to scripture on audio and to the church services of First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by sisters, Deborah (Tom) Lane of Richmond, Janet (Kevin) Schnyders of Hudsonville, Michigan; his uncles, Glen Timm of Edgewater, Florida and Lawrence (Lynn) Apsey of Lincoln, Michigan; his aunts, Connie (Stan) Lee of Mikado, Michigan, Cyndi (Tom) Knight of Oxnard, California, Linda (Larry) Somers of Lincoln, Michigan, and Carol (Timm) Twidt of Hudson, Florida.

He also leaves his nieces, Lauren, Leah, Elyssa, and Erica Lane, and Annaliese Schnyders; nephews, Jeremy Lane and Joshua Schnyders; his cousins, Clarinda Halk, Ruthann Delgadillo, Todd Williams, Jodi Williams, Larry J. Apsey, Raleigh Potts, Jacki Cox, Laurie DuCharme, Tom Timm and Douglas Timm.

Kevin was preceded in death by grandparents, John and Mabel Timm, Gerald and Nora Apsey and his uncle Howard Timm.

Services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Fort officiating. Burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tom Lane, Jeremy Lane, Kevin Schnyders, Josh Schnyders, David Cornelison, and Ron Hunt. Honorary bearers will be Stanley Lee and members of the BYKOTA Sunday school class.

Donnie Atkins

Donnie Atkins age 55, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday Dec. 17, 2013 in Lexington. Donnie was born Feb. 3, 1958 in Cleveland OH.

He was a 1976 graduate of Berea Community High School , and was best known for his tremendous baseball talent. Donnie later spent several years traveling and playing high level softball, over the years he spent much of his time as an avid baseball card collector, bowler, golfer, and stratomatic baseball game enthusiast. He was known for his competitiveness, strong work ethic, sense of humor and his love for cats and his special dog sparky. Donnie had been a 30 year employee of Sargent and Greenleaf Stanley Works in Nicholasville, KY.

Donnie is survived by his father Don (Robert) Atkins, his sister Shari (Matt) Atkins Hall, brothers Ron (Cherree) Atkins and Ken (Becky) Atkins, nieces Sasha Quinley, Jazmine Quinley, and nephews Jonathan Atkins, and Bradley Atkins, and special close friend Angela Day and her daughters Ashley and Jana.

Donnie was preceded in death by his mother Betty Townsend Atkins.

Funeral services will be Saturday Dec. 21, 2013 at Lakes Funeral Home at 11:00 am with Pastor Wayne Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-9 pm at the Funeral Home.

Lewis William Ross

Mr. Lewis William Ross, 94, of Paint Lick, Kentucky, known by friends and family as “Jake,” passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at home with family and friends by his side. He was born October 11, 1919, to William “Bill” Ross and Marietta (Hayes) Ross, both of whom preceded him in death.

On February 23, 1938, he was united in marriage to his wife, Estill Virginia (Ethel) Conn-Ross, with a lot of love and commitment.

Of this marriage, they were blessed with four daughters, Shirley Ann (and late husband Vernon Hawley) of Paint Lick, Kentucky, Marietta “Crickette” Ross of Paint Lick, Kentucky, Billie Sue “Doc” (and Doug) Lear of Brodhead, Kentucky, and Judy Marie (and Nelson) Cates of Paint Lick, Kentucky.

Jake was also blessed with nine grandchildren who called him Papa Ross: Lynn Dalton, Sandy Lainhart, Mike Hawley, Bill Lear, Jeff Lear, Greg Ross, Jennifer Glovack, Rodney Cates and Celena Bullock.

Out of nine grandchildren, he was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, and from these he was blessed with six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Ethel, who passed away January 20, 1993, he was preceded in death by: one brother, Alec Ross; six sisters, Myrtle “Sis” Walters, Callie Hutchinson, Cleone Hagan, Maydrew Chambers, Beulah Ross (who died as a child) and Geneva Howard.

He was a farmer, painter, trapper and worked at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky, until he went into business for himself as a painter and ginseng grower for many years. Jake was a member of Paint Lick Christian Church.

Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Shelby Cates officiating. Burial will follow in the Manse Cemetery of Paint Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ella Mae Tevis, 79, of Richmond, departed this life Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Baptist Health – Richmond after a short illness. She was born October 4, 1934 in Richmond, Kentucky, to the late Gholston Tevis and Nettie Doyle Tevis. She professed her faith in Christ early in life and was united with the First Baptist Church at Francis and Collins Streets.

She was educated at Richmond High School. Ms. Tevis was a blessing to many prominent families in Madison County, where she loved, cared, and nurtured for many years. Shunning the spot light, she lived her life as a cornerstone rock to everyone she loved. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, William B. Tevis.

She is survived by her son, John (Linda) Goodloe; her daughter, Alice (James) Lockett; her granddaughter, Carolyn Price; several grandchildren including two grandsons, William (Shalye) Lockett and DeAaron Ballew.

She also leaves two sisters, Lee (Russell) Allen and JoAnn Clay; one brother, John (Ila) Tevis, and a host of additional grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends.

A celebration of Ella Mae’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Friday. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Frances F. Stacy, 83, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, in Zephyrhills, Florida. She was born in Houston County, Alabama, on July 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Coker and Della Ketchum Sims.

Mrs. Stacy was a graduate of the Eastern Kentucky University nursing program and worked as a registered nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 20 years.

She was the widow of Eldon Stacy and was a member of the Richmond First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include: four daughters, Diane Doty (Jerry) of Bolivar, Mo., Deborah Ward of Jacksonville, Fla., Donna Love of Charlotte, N.C., and Rebecca Terrill (Mike) of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two stepsons, Jerry Stacy (Loretta) of Richmond and E.B. Stacy (Norma) of Waco; two stepdaughters, Gail Mullins (Troy) of Ravenna and Eva Jo Withers (L.C.) of Batavia, Ohio; three grandchildren, Donna Darlene Wilson Shultz (Jeff), Amber Lynn Bledsoe and Daniel Hatfield (Mary); three great-grandchildren, Chloe R. Bledsoe, Hunter Foster Murphy and Lillian G. Hatfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hazel Lainhart Rogers, 96, of Berea, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the Compassionate Care Center. Mrs. Rogers was born in Jackson County, Kentucky, on January 26, 1917, the daughter of Jerry Todd and Bessie Hisel Lainhart.

She is survived by: two sons, J.C. Rogers and wife Martha Ann of Okeechobee, Florida, and Roy Rogers and wife Floretta of Richmond; her daughter, Irene Rogers of Berea; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by: her husband, Curtis Rogers Jr.; a daughter, Imogene “Jean” Smith; three brothers, Sanford, Ralph and Charles Lainhart; her sister, Gracie Lainhart; and two grandchildren, Janette and Adam.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013, at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Arthur Ray officiating. Burial will follow in the Paint Lick Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Billye Rae Turpin Parke, of Red House, Kentucky, the wife of Garnett Parke, passed away Wednesday morning, December 18, 2013. A lifelong resident of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew H. and Evelyn Wells Turpin.

She was a graduate of Madison Central High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. She was a devoted member of the Red House Baptist Church.

She is also survived by her loving family: three sons and one daughter: Mike (Glenda), Doug (Debbie), Francette Durbin and Keith (Betty); grandchildren, Phillip Parke (Amie), Christina Thomas (Roger), Holli Hatmaker (Drew), Amanda Rydberg (Joe), Neil Durbin and Lee Parke; great-grandchildren, Whitney, Emily and Luke Thomas, Grace Rydberg, Logan, Hallie Mae and Cale Parke.

She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of great-grandbaby, Hatmaker, in the spring.

She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Bobbie Turpin Swinford; and niece Sheryl Cox (Rob), as well as numerous cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sonny Turpin; and son-in-law, Garry Durbin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Red House Baptist Church, 2301 Red House Road, with Dr. Deron Cobb officiating. Interment will be in the Parke Family Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

David Arthur Young 43 of Copper Creek Road passed away Saturday December 14, 2013. David was born in Dayton, Ohio to Kenneth and Linda Northern Young.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his daughter Witney (Brandon) Nichols, one brother Robert (Marti) Dye and one sister Michelle (Kirk) Whitaker.

He was preceded in death by one brother Melvin Young.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Friday December 20, 2013 at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallaceton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00pm until time of services at the funeral home.

Dallas Ray Hutchens, 76, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013, at Baptist Health-Richmond. Mr. Hutchens was born in Paris, Kentucky, on April 6, 1937, to Joseph and Rosa White Hutchens. He was retired from Madison Grocery and of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Delphia Harvey Hutchens; four daughters, Cynthia Hiatt and husband Russell of Waco, Jeana Kelley and husband Jeff of Richmond, Dalvonne Burns and husband Tony of Bonita Springs, Florida, and LaWanda Barger of Richmond; 10 grandchildren, Dillon Hutchens and wife Ashley, James Hutchens and wife Asia, Maria Lamb and husband Billy, Angel Deckert, Gregory Kelley and wife Sabrina, Tyler Kelley, Kaylee Burns, Trevor Burns, Dakota Barger and Brandon Galliger; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hutchens is also preceded in death by: four brothers, Eulus, Sylvester, Bruce and James Hutchens; four sisters, Christine Moore, Vadana Bush, Myrtle Mountjoy, Helen Imhoff; and his great-granddaughter, Lendsay Barger.

Funeral services will be conducted 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Evangelist Lynn Young officiating. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A committal service will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday at Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Michael Lance Putnam, 40, of Nina Ridge Road passed away December 15, 2013 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington,KY. Lance is survived by his wife Jennifer Putnam, a son Sawyer Lane Putnam and a daughter Sydney Lynn Putnam.

He was born in Huntsville, AL. on February 10, 1973 to Harvey and Sarah Putnam. Lance owned and operated Audio Center in Richmond, KY and was a member of the Scott’s Fork Christian Church.

Also surviving is a sister, Paige Putnam McClure(Kevin) of Alabama. Also surviving is his father in law & mother in law John & Joan Czarniecki. Funeral Services 11: 00 A.M. Wednesday December 18, 2013 at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation Tuesday 6-9 P.M.

Phyllis (Moore) Vickers was born October 16, 1950 in Cincinnati, Ohio and departed this life Sunday, December 15, 2013 at her residence in Tyner, being 63 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Albert & Eliza (Rutherford) Moore.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Randall {Randy} Vickers of Tyner and by three children, Randi Moore and her husband Lonzo of Tyner, Rosana Denham and her husband Mike of Tyner and Matt Vickers and his fiancé Jessicah Ward of Gray Hawk. She is also survived by a brother, James Moore and his wife Mable of Berea; a sister in law; VeRon Moore of Berea; a sister in law Pam Ward of Tyner who she loved like a sister; her father in law, Pete Vickers, who she loved like her own father and Mitchell Madden of Tyner, who she loved as her own child. Phyllis was blessed with six grandchildren, Lucas, Shelby, Noah, Zoie, Lendon & Jayden.

In addition to her mother, Phyllis was also preceded in death by her brother, Clifton Moore.

Phyllis was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. She loved attending Jackson County High School basketball games. Without a doubt, Phyllis was probably Jackson County’s #1 fan.

Funeral service was held 2:00PM Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Lakes Funeral Home McKee with Bro. Gary Farmer and Bro. Bobby Burchette officiating. Burial followed in the Moore Cemetery. Visitation was at 6:00PM Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Keith Hays, Larry Smith, Charley Ward, Greg Parrett, Brian Harris, Wendell Kilburn & Timmy Farmer.

Honorary pallbearers were Betty Bond, Angie Tincher, Julia Sparks, Jolene Peters, Katrina Webb, Janie Allen, Jennifer Lake, Linda Kilburn, Ronnie Vaughn and JCHS Boys Basketball players past/present/future.
