According to the 2012 Kentucky Overdose Fatality Report issued by the Office of Drug Control Policy, prescription drug abuse deaths decreased for the first time in a decade. However, heroin overdose deaths exploded 550% from 2011 to 2012. In response to the heroin epidemic that is sweeping the nation, the Madison County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy board is hosting the “Heroin in Kentucky Headlines” Conference on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the First United Methodist Church Ministry Center on West Main Street in Richmond. The event is set to coincide with Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest drug prevention campaign. Please see the attached event flyer.

The conference will provide important information and resources that will help promote the prevention and awareness of heroin abuse. Special guest speakers include:

Dr. Cristin Rolf, Deputy KY Medical Examiner

Jimmy Cornelison, Madison County Coroner

Hon. Kerry Harvey, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky

Special Agent Jared Sullivan, United States Drug Enforcement Agency

Tammy Duke Paull, BA, CADC, PRIDE Program Director Bluegrass Prevention

Law enforcement agencies, medical professionals, educators and school administrators, community leaders, elected officials, coalition members, social workers, legal professionals, adult and juvenile criminal justice professionals and parents are encouraged to attend. Documentation will be available for self-reporting continuing education hours.

The “Heroin in Kentucky’s Headlines” Conference is being coordinated by board members Jerian Shaw, Jessica Miller, Jennifer Sherwood, Karensa Johnson and Jennifer Webb. The event, which includes breakfast, is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however. Registration is required and will be available after October 1, 2013 at www.madisoncountyasap.com.
