State Rep. Rita Smart, who has served the people of Madison County in the General Assembly since 2011, has been appointed by House leaders to the powerful Appropriations and Revenue Committee, which plays a crucial role in writing the state’s budget.
“This is a great honor, because this committee does so much to determine the direction of the state and how our tax dollars are spent,” said Rep. Smart, D-Richmond. “Our community will now have a much stronger say because of this.”
“Rita has been an outstanding member of the House from the moment she came to Frankfort,” said House Speaker Greg Stumbo. “It was an easy choice to include her on this committee. She will truly be an asset, both to the committee and the people of Kentucky.”
State Rep. Rick Rand, the committee’s chairman, said, “It is unusual for someone to join Appropriations and Revenue so early in her legislative career, but Rita is the welcome exception.”
In addition to Appropriations and Revenue, Rep. Smart is also a member of these other House committees: Agriculture & Small Business; Education; Local Government; and Veterans, Military Affairs & Public Protection.
