Native Madison County Man Dies in Afghanistan

Brett Benton

A native Madison County man died in Afghanistan Saturday June 4 when an improvised explosive device detonated near him. Brett Benton had left the Kenton County Police Department where he held the rank of sergeant a few weeks ago to work as a private contractor training local police in Afghanistan.

Benton had worked most of his life serving the central public. After high school he joined the National Guard, and while still in the Guard he worked as a dispatcher for the Kentucky State Police Post in Richmond. Benton had also worked for the Nicholasville Police Department prior to joining the Kenton County Police Department.

One of Bentons life long friends Toby Coyle said ” Benton was a man of universal values. He loved his family, loved his friends, loved his country, and he loved his Kentucky Wildcats.” Coyle also stated that “Brett knew the dangers, but I guess the love in his heart for his country and his family outweighed the dangerous situation that he was facing.”

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time but Benton will be buried in Richmond.
